Thomas D. Shinew

Thomas D. "Tom" Shinew, 95, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, July 12, 2023.

Tom was born Jan. 6, 1928, at the home on the family farm in Rudolph to William B. and Frankie (Bower) Shinew. That is where he lived out the entirety of his life, save for the time served in U.S. Navy.

Tom is survived by his children, William (Julie) Shinew, Wilma Shinew, Gary (Ginny) Shinew, and Randy Shinew; grandchildren, Steve (Beth) Aungst, Tomas (Kelly) Shinew, Carissa (Nick Gibson) Coughlin, Benjamin Shinew, Jonathon (Cortnee) Shinew, and Michaela (Franklin) Slagle; and great-grandchildren, Taylour and Garrett, Garett and Claire, Olivia, Jacob, and Jackson, and Rowan. He has been loved dearly and will be deeply missed by all!

Tom was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Russell Shinew; sisters, Maxine Wagner and Jean Flames; loving wife of 66 years, Christina, whom he married Aug. 7, 1954, in a house across the road; and infant son, Steven Shinew.

Tom grew up learning to farm with his father and older brother. He had a love for farming that extended to watching his sons and grandsons take over the responsibilities. He was a lifelong farmer who not only produced grain, but also raised livestock, having a particular love for his cattle. He remained involved until the day he passed, his last two days spent in the cab of the combine and riding along to haul grain to the elevator.

Tom was a member of Trinity Baptist Church, Findlay, and where he served as an usher and greeter.

Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Monday, July 17, 2023, at SMITH-CRATES FUNERAL HOME, North Baltimore.

Tom's graveside service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 18, 2023, at Portage Cemetery with Pastor Allen Minton officiating.
