Robert Smith Obituary

Robert A. Smith

Robert A. "Bob" Smith, 95, a pillar of the McComb community, passed away Wednesday, July 17, 2024, at Blanchard Valley Hospital.

Bob was born on Halloween, 1928, to Arthur H. and Florence Von Stein Smith and was a life-long resident of McComb. He married Shirley Beam on Feb. 29, 1952, and she preceded him in death.

Bob is survived by his children, Paula (Bill) McKibben, Sally Smith-Black, Nancy (Richard) Briley, and Robert (Kristi) Smith; grandchildren, Rebecca McKibben Schwarz and Kurt (Kara) McKibben, Julia Briley (Christopher) Thrash, Johanna Black, and Adam, Benjamin, and Erin Smith; and great-grandchildren, Kassandra, Karson, and Karter McKibben, and Blaize and Brooks Schwarz.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; sister, Barbara Mae; brother, Bill and his wife Mary Lou; and son-in-law, Larry Black.

Bob graduated from McComb High School in 1946 and continued his education at Bowling Green State University. He graduated in 1950 with a B.S. in Business Administration, major in accounting. He earned his MBA in 1968 and later became a CPA.

His career spanned 34 years at Marathon Oil Company in Findlay. At the time of his retirement in 1986, he was a department manager in accounting. He joined University of Findlay as an adjunct faculty member, teaching economics and accounting for 11 years.

Bob was civic-minded and served for two terms on McComb Village Council. For 65 years, he was a member of McComb Rotary Club.

Bob loved everything McComb, especially when it came to football. He announced the home football games for 40 years and continued for another 31 years as a spotter. The last few years, he published the annual McComb Panther Football compilation of statistics and newspaper articles. In November, 2022, he was humbled when the press box was named in his honor.

Golf was another sport Bob loved. He was the bookkeeper for Shady Acres Golf Course for decades. When he learned that Shady Acres was closing, he published a 2018 photo calendar of the course.

While Bob dearly loved his McComb community, the thing he cherished the most was his family. He was proud to register the Von Stein-Smith family farm as an Ohio Century Farm.

Visitation will be 1-4 p.m. Sunday, July 21, 2024, at St. John's Lutheran Church, 203 West South Street, McComb. Bob's celebration of life service will be 11 a.m. Monday, July 22, 2024, at the church. Burial will follow services at McComb Union Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be gifted in Bob's memory to the Robert A. & Shirley Smith Family Scholarship by check, payable to The Community Foundation, 101 W. Sandusky Street, Suite 207, Findlay, Ohio, 45840. Please designate the scholarship name on the memo line. You may also donate online at www.community-foundation.com.
