Larry Slaughterbeck Obituary

Larry Slaughterbeck

Larry Slaughterbeck, born in 1941, passed away Monday, January 26, 2026. A lifelong resident of the corner of East Broadway and Beecher Street in North Baltimore, Larry was deeply rooted in the community that shaped him.

Larry was a proud graduate of North Baltimore High School, Class of 1959. He married the love of his life, Nancy Dermer, in 1959, beginning a partnership that spanned more than six decades. Nancy survives him.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Edward Slaughterbeck and Betty (Kuhlman) Slaughterbeck and by his sister, Jill Ann Slaughterbeck.

He is survived by his brother, Ned (Theresa) Slaughterbeck and his uncle, Tom Kuhlman.

He was a devoted and beloved father to Gary (Julie) Slaughterbeck and Julie (Byron) Brown, and a loving grandfather to Rachel Brown, Lindsay Brown, Eric (Maggie) Brown, Samuel (Danielle) Slaughterbeck, Michael Slaughterbeck, and Stephen Slaughterbeck. In recent years, Larry was especially blessed to become a great-grandfather.

Larry retired from Western & Southern as District Sales Manager.

He served North Baltimore in many volunteer roles, including Congregational President of St. Luke's Lutheran Church, Sunday School Superintendent, President of North Baltimore Athletic Supporters, Board Member of North Baltimore Historical Society, Jaycees President, NBHS 50 Year Club, Class Reunion Planner and Commissioner of Cooperstown Softball League.

Friendship was at the heart of Larry's life. He deeply valued his friends and acquaintances and cherished the traditions he shared with them, from the Saturday Morning Running Club to the Polo Club and McDonald's Morning Coffee. He loved reminiscing and was always eager to share fond stories from his life in North Baltimore.

A man of many talents and wide-ranging interests, Larry was an avid cyclist and runner, completing marathons in Chicago, Toledo, Columbus, and Toronto. One of the great joys of his retirement was riding his bike on the Slippery Elm Trail. He was also an exceptional cook, especially known for his memorable holiday feasts and Sunday after-church lunches -as well as a watercolor artist, decoy carver, fisherman, author, and poet. His articles appeared frequently in the North Baltimore News, and his poetry was published in the Upland Almanac and several area papers. One of his final projects was co-authoring a book, "The Adventures of George Pilcher," celebrating the life of a former North Baltimore resident and Alaska explorer.

Larry's life was defined by joy-for his family, his friends, and his community-and we will carry it forward.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate staff at Birchaven, Parkinson's classes at 50 North, and Bridge Home Health & Hospice for their care, kindness, and support.

His funeral service will begin at 12 p.m. Thursday, January 29, 2026, at SMITH-CRATES FUNERAL HOME, North Baltimore, where visitation will be from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. prior to the service. Burial will be at New Maplewood Cemetery, North Baltimore. Chaplain Kathy Archer is officiating.

Memorials may be made to St. Luke's Lutheran Church, North Baltimore, or Hancock County Parkinson's Network, 1109 Glenmeadow Drive, Findlay.

I met Larry when I worked at Hard Bodys Gym aka St Julian's in Findlay. Larry was always so kind and always had a smile.
I was teaching classes at 50 North when I ran into Larry again. No matter what was going on in his life, he always had a smile and kind word, and so appreciative. He was one of a kind and I was blessed to have met him!
