Viola Rose Topp, RN

Viola Rose (Alt) Topp, RN, 94, of Leipsic, passed away at 2:19 p.m. Wednesday, May 17, 2023, at The Meadows of Leipsic surrounded by her loving family.

She was born July 29, 1928, in Leipsic, to Henry F. and Luella (Ricker) Alt. She married Robert J. "Bob" Topp on April 28, 1951, and he preceded her in death Feb. 25, 1996.

Viola's survivors include five children, Mike (Pam) Topp of Arlington, Sue Reynolds of Leipsic, Steve (Denise) Topp of Seville, Cherri (Dave) Maag of Kendallville, Indiana, and Karyn (Craig) Westrick of Leipsic; 14 grandchildren, Cathi (Brandon) Kisseberth, Jenni (Chance) Collins, Levi Topp (Becca Humbert), Brandon (Ashley) Reynolds, Brett (Britnee) Reynolds, Brian (Ashley) Reynolds, Brock (Shelby) Reynolds, Nicole Topp, Michelle (Robert) Williams, Jared (Natalie) Topp, Ethan Maag (Natalie Nickles), Garrett Maag, Carson Maag, and Emily Westrick; 11 great-grandchildren, Walker and Porter Collins, Peyton Kisseberth, Grady, Lane, and Hadliegh Reynolds, Maelyn and Everly Reynolds, Landon and Ava Reynolds, Avery Topp, and one on the way; and four siblings, John Alt of Michigan, Ghnelda Schimmoeller of Ft. Jennings, Bob (Carolyn) Alt of Leipsic, and Kenny (Sandy) Alt of Michigan.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; great-grandchild, Quinn Collins; five siblings, Frances Alt, Bill (Dorothy) Alt, Bernard (Dorothy) Alt, Dick Alt, and Daniel Alt; sister-in-law, JoLou Alt; and brother-in-law, Cleo "Click" Schimmoeller.

Viola was a proud student of a one-room schoolhouse until 8th grade and 1946 graduate of Leipsic High School. She attended St. Rita's School of Nursing and became a registered nurse for 60 years. She was employed for Dr. James Baker and Barr, Dr. Walter Donahue, Dr. Robert Zarzar, Dr. Laura Waldron, Dr. David Schultz, Kathy Selhorst, CNP, Blanchard Valley Primary Care, and Putnam Acres Nursing Home. The doctors changed, but "Nurse Vi" was a constant. She would know three generations of family history without referring to a computer because she cared for all three generations. Viola was also a great influence on a number of students who chose nursing as a career and continued her legacy to present day.

Viola volunteered for American Heart Association and was its Putnam County Chair for 35 years, American Red Cross Blood Mobile, and Leipsic Local Schools HOST program. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Leipsic, its Altar Rosary Society and Catholic Ladies of Columbia, American Legion Auxiliary, and St. Rita's School of Nursing Alumni Association. Viola was awarded Leipsic Bicentennial Queen in 1957, Leipsic Sesquicentennial Queen in 2007, and Putnam County Senior Citizen of the Year in 2010.

Viola loved gardening, canning, baking, decorating cakes, being of service to others, and spending time with her family, especially her grands and great-grands.

Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 20, 2023, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Leipsic, with Fr. Randy Giesige officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Friday, May 19, 2023, at LOVE-HEITMEYER FUNERAL HOME, Leipsic, where a C.L. of C. Rosary will take place at 7:30 p.m. Additional visitation will be 9:30-10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Parish Life Center, Leipsic.
