Rita E. Cupp
Rita Evangeline Cupp, 93, of Carey, passed away Wednesday, July 5, 2023, at home surrounded by her loving children.
Rita was born Jan. 26, 1930, in Carey, to Ralph and Inez (Stork) McKinnon and later graduated from Carey High School in 1948.
Rita caught the eye of Carl E. Cupp after he moved to Carey to teach at the high school. Carl was teaching Rita's sister, Irene, how to drive and found out Rita worked at the local grocery store. After buying several apples for lunch from Rita, Carl finally convinced Rita to go on a date and the two were married Aug. 27, 1955. Carl preceded Rita in death in 1979.
Rita worked in all the departments of Fredrick's IGA in Carey for more than 50 years, retiring in 1992 and continued being an active saleswoman for Avon.
Rita was a lifelong member of Our Lady of Consolation Parish and volunteered with The Rosary Altar Society. She was also an Auxiliary member at American Legion and VFW in Carey. Rita was involved with The Carey Jaycee Organization, President of the Catholic School Board for four years, and was a member of the Red Hat Society which she thoroughly enjoyed.
Rita loved her family and enjoyed time spent with her children, grandchildren, and biweekly visits from her great-grandchildren.
She will be missed by three children, Kathleen A. Cain of Forest, Gregory S. Cupp of Carey, and Karen M. (Jerry) Moore of Forest; grandchildren, Carrie (Adam Greene) Cain of Forest, Charles (Kali Price) Cain of Forest, Zachary Cupp of Findlay, Rachel (Drew) Moore-Hunt of Georgia, and Carly Moore of Bowling Green; great-grandchildren, Sade Yinger, Arthur Cain, Alice Cain, Anna Cain, and Aengus Cain; and sister, Irene Hunter.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Inez; husband, Carl; infant son, Robert; sisters, Helen and Gloria McKinnon, and Mabel (Frank) Anast; brother, Harold; and brother-in-law, William Hunter.
Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Monday, July 10, 2023, at Stombaugh-Batton Funeral Home, 225 West Findlay Street, Carey. Rita's Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 11, 2023, at The Original Shrine of Our Lady of Consolation, South Lake Street and Clay Street, with Fr. Tom Merrill, OFM Conv. presiding. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery, Carey.
Donations may be made in Rita's honor to Our Lady Consolation School or Wyandot County Hospice and can be sent to the funeral home.
