Paul Albert Mendelsohn II

Paul Albert Mendelsohn II, 91, passed away Monday, Oct. 2, 2023, at Sunrise Assisted Living, Findlay.

He was born Feb. 17, 1932, in Chicago, Illinois, to Paul Albert and Maym (Steadman) Mendelsohn.

Paul was a 1950 graduate of East Lansing High School and later Michigan State University, earning a bachelor's degree in communications, where he also was a competitive wrestler. Paul proudly served in U.S. Army where he was a member of the 101st Airborne out of Fort Campbell, Kentucky. Following his service and college, Paul married Mary Elizabeth (Lindsay) on Aug. 14, 1954, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Muskegon, and together they raised their family in Mason, Michigan. Mary preceded him in death Oct. 14, 2019.

Paul worked for Michigan Department of Corrections and was also an assistant professor at Lansing Community College where he taught Criminal Justice. After retirement, Paul and Mary moved to Horsehead Lake, Mecosta, Michigan. He was an active member of St. James Catholic Church in Mason and St. Michael Catholic Church in Remus. Paul and Mary helped form several organizations including M.E.R.C.I., sponsoring over 80 refugees from Vietnam, Cambodia, and Poland, and the Rural Emergency Outreach Food Bank in Ingham County. Paul was widely known for his incredible sense of humor and served as the toastmaster for countless functions.

Paul is survived by three children, Michael Mendelsohn of Safety Harbor, Florida, Patrick Mendelsohn of Windham, Maine, and Laurie (Robert) Walles of Findlay; and five grandchildren, Andy, Laurel, and Lindsay Walles, and Dane and Bezabeh Mendelsohn.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; and one brother.

Paul's graveside services will be 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 6, 2023, at Stanwood Cemetery, Stanwood, Michigan.
