James Mennel Obituary

James Richard Mennel

James Richard Mennel was born October 26, 1947, to Don and Patsy Mennel. James ("Jim") Mennel lived a life full of purpose, service, and well-timed wit. Jim passed away peacefully at home on June 3, 2025, with his family by his side.

Jim is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Susan Stoll Mennel; his children, Ashley (Gerald) and Michael (Elizabeth); and five cherished grandchildren: Taylor, Haley, Megan, Jacob, and Matthew-each of whom knew Grandpa as a master storyteller, relentless teaser, and tireless source of love. He is also survived by his brothers, Donald (Louise) and John (Suzi), along with many loving nieces and nephews.

Jim attended the Vermont Military Academy and then the College of Wooster, where he graduated in 1969 with a degree in economics- more importantly, it's where he met his future wife, Sue.

After graduation, Jim was drafted into the U.S. Air Force and served honorably during the Vietnam War. Upon returning home to Fostoria, he joined the family business and became Vice President of Mennel Milling. Despite a successful career, Jim felt a different calling. Trading boardrooms for classrooms, he became an elementary school teacher-where his natural gift for connecting with kids, and his unmatched ability to make them laugh while learning, made him a phenomenal educator. He was the kind of teacher students remembered decades later, not just for his lessons, but for how he made them feel.

Jim also gave generously of his time. He coached YMCA sports for years, always emphasizing teamwork, hustle, and fun. He volunteered with Feed My Children, served on the Fostoria Board of Education and the local Senior Center, and never hesitated to support organizations he believed were making a positive difference. Jim was a proud member of both the YMCA Board and the Fostoria Hospital Board-and he especially loved spending time at the YMCA, a place that brought him joy and a strong sense of community.

He was an avid golfer and a competitive card player-known for his love of the game, his stylish hats, and the people who played it with him. Win or lose, he always brought good conversation and just enough chatter to keep things interesting.

Jim lived by a few simple but profound rules: treat others the way you'd want to be treated, remember that we all put our pants on one leg at a time, and never underestimate the power of kindness (or a well-timed dad joke).

Jim Mennel leaves behind a legacy of humor, humility, and heart-a life well lived and well loved. The Mennel family thanks the many wonderful people who cared for Jim in the last several years. We are so very grateful for your love and support.

The family will hold a private service with military honors by United Veterans of Fostoria and welcomes all for a memorial visitation from 3-6 p.m. at Harrold-Floriana Funeral Home, Fostoria, Friday, June 6, 2025.

It is with a heavy heart we learn of Jim´s passing. Betsy and I became fast friends with Jim. We shared our YMCA and Fostoria Country Club experiences over decades. I last saw Jim at the golf course late one fall about 5 years ago. We talked for about 30 minutes. Jim was always interested in how others were doing. Conversation came very easy with Jim.

Jim was everyone´s friend! An individual who exhibited grace and humility. It is a honor to call him my friend and he will be greatly missed!

Mr. Mennel´s kindness and joy for teaching will last with me forever. It´s been 30 years and I can still remember his smile as he told us jokes in class. What a wonderful person <3

Mr. Mennel was my 4th grade teacher at Longfellow back in 2000 (I believe). He was always so kind and understanding. My home life had just gone through a major change, and he always had a way of making me feel heard and important. He was a huge positive influence at that time of my life.

I'm deeply saddened to learn of Jim's passing. We were good friends growing up in Fostoria. He was always a special individual, kind, reserved, and with his own individual type of class. My condolences go out to the entire Mennel Family.

I am so sorry to hear of Jim´s passing. I worked with Jim in the Grain Department of Mennel Milling in the early 1980s, and Jim was a great person to work for. He was a good supervisor who always helped me focus on what I did well and supported me when I made a mistake. He taught me there are three important things when a mistake is made: do you know what happened? Do you know how to fix it? Let it go. No need to keep beating yourself up. Despite the years that have passed, his guidance has continued to influence me. He was a great guy.

Mr. Mennel holds a special place in my heart. A teacher who will always be remembered for his kindness and dedication to his students. I´ll never forget our field trip to the roller rink when I was too scared to move and he took my hand and helped me get over that fear. He continually checked in on me after elementary school all the way through high school. When I moved to Florida to teach, he offered words of wisdom, while also continually checking in on me. He was truly a legend. The world was a better place because of him. Sending condolences to the family.

I am so sorry to hear of Mr. Mennel's passing, he was the best teacher that my children ever had at Fostoria schools. My older children are now 41, 39 and 36 and we still talk about Mr. Mennel and how he was a great teacher and mentor for them and all of their children he came in contact with! We need more Mr. Mennels! Thoughts and prayers to his family.

Though I only met Jim a few times, I feel like I´ve gotten to know him well through all the wisdom and stories Mike has shared over the years. His life lessons have had a lasting impact, and he´ll be remembered with respect and gratitude, especially during our rounds of golf, where his spirit will no doubt be with us. Mike will always keep his spirit and jokes alive! Especially if we happen to get a hole in one on a par three, only to tell people about our eagle on that hole to see if they get it!
