Gene T. Schey, 95, of Findlay, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2023, surrounded by his loving family at Primrose Retirement Community, Findlay.

Gene was born Sept. 20, 1927, in Leipsic, to Walter S. and Jessie E. (Pickens) Schey.

Gene graduated from Findlay High School in 1945 and joined U.S. Army in November of the same year. He was very proud of his service, having spent most of his time working at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. When he returned to Findlay in 1948, he was a Technical Sergeant in rank.

In 1953, Gene married Patricia Bayless and they were divorced in 1981. Their four children are Dennis G. (Brenda) Schey, Douglas R. (Robin) Schey, Julie L. (Shah) Baber, and Jayne A. (Craig) Allen. His grandchildren are Jessica, Ryan, Derek, Katelin, and Joshua, children of Dennis and Brenda, Logan, Madison, Julie, and Alyssa, children of Doug and Robin, Aishah, Mimi, and Amy, children of Julie and Shah, and Philip, Matthew, and Chris (Kallie), sons of Jayne and Craig. One grandson, Austin, is deceased. There are 13 great-grandchildren.

In 1990, Gene married Shirley A. Barger. There are three stepchildren, Jim (Lydia), Susan, and Jack (Andrea) Barger. Gene had five stepgrandchildren, Zachary (Ashley), Luke (Nadia), Jacob, Annabelle, and Lucille Barger, and four stepgreat-grandchildren.

Gene's brothers and sisters have all passed away. They were Woodrow, Robert, and Donald Schey, Mildred Taylor, Betty Jane Rump, and Helen Odell. A sister, Doris, died at a young age.

Gene was an independent contractor and builder for many years, after which he worked for Bishop-Kandel Realty. In 2017, during his 90th birthday celebration at Riverside Park, he was honored by the city of Findlay with a plaque as the builder of Waterfall Pavilion.

Gene was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Findlay, since the age of 11. He was a lifetime member of AmVets, American Legion, Royal Arcanum, and DAV.

The family wishes to share their sincere thanks to the staff of Primrose Retirement Community and Bridge Hospice Care Center, Findlay, for their excellent care for Gene.

Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 6, 2023, and 10-11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 7, 2023, at COLDREN-CRATES FUNERAL HOME, 205 W. Sandusky Street, Findlay. Gene's funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Private family burial will follow at Benton Ridge Cemetery, Benton Ridge.
