Elvet Foulkes Obituary

Elvet W. Foulkes

Elvet Wendell Foulkes, 93, of Columbus Grove, died on Saturday morning March 15, 2025, at his home. He was born April 11, 1931, in Vaughnsville to the late Thomas and Quartense (Thomas) Foulkes. On April 19, 1953, he married his childhood sweetheart, Reita Beemer, who preceded him in death May 1, 2015.

Elvet is survived by two daughters, Brenda (J. Daniel) Groman of Columbus Grove and Julie (Mark) Yoder of Bluffton; his six grandchildren, Krysti (Phil) Schey, Kurt (Amy) Groman, Joel (Rachel) Groman, Paul (fiancé Naomi Kline) Yoder, David (Anna) Yoder, Rachel (Nathan) West; seven great-grandsons and seven great-granddaughters. He is also survived by one sister, Della Salter of Bluffton; a sister-in-law, Mary Ann (Gene) Amstutz of Pandora; and several nieces and nephews.

He was quite proud of his Welsh heritage and leaves behind several cherished cousins in Canada and Wales.

Elvet was preceded in death by his daughter, Debbie, September 24, 1980; his sister, Doris (Donald) Rockhill; and sister-in-law, Grace Marshall; as well as brothers-in-law, Stanley Salter and Don Marshall.

Elvet was the 1949 valedictorian of Beaverdam High School. After being stationed with the Army in Japan after the Korean War, he spent his life operating the family farm. Elvet was an excellent basketball player in high school and played for the Army.

Elvet loved Jesus. It was exemplified in his lifelong membership of Rockport Community Bible Church, where he actively participated in its ministry, his active involvement in Gideon's International, his frequent visits to Putnam County jail to share with those incarcerated there, his involvement on the board of Bluffton-Pandora Youth of Christ, and his consistent spiritual conversations with all he met.

He was a member of Allen County Farm Bureau, the board of the Bluffton Hospital (involved in the Bluffton/Findlay merger and expansion), and was on the board of Midwest Electric. Elvet was also a member of Lincoln Highway Association and a charter member of Vintage Chevrolet Club of America's Western Buckeye Region.

Elvet's services will begin at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 22, 2025, at Rockport Community Bible Church. Pastor Sharyn Cline and Jeremy Basinger officiating. Burial will be at Rockport Cemetery following the service.

Visitation will be from 2-4 p.m. & 6-8 p.m., Friday, March 21, 2025, at Chiles-Laman Funeral & Cremation Services, Bluffton.

I was saddened to hear of his passing, but joyful in that he is now with Jesus and all the souls, including his wife and family that preceded him. I came to know Elvet and his wife as they came and served at Our Daily Bread Soup Kitchen when I was the director there. His spirit and kindness were such that after I was no longer there I was moved to go and visit him one day close to his birthday in 2017. I enjoyed my visit with him then at his home so much and he had a brightened spirit in my being with him. He spoke of his true love, Reita, and it was evident he was mourning her passing still. I am so blessed to have called him friend and servant of the Lord.

Due to some health issues we won´t be able to attend the funeral! ELVET was a very nice person, a very good example of a good Christian. He didn´t know a stranger. He´ll be a wonderful addition to God´s angels! HE´LL BE MISSED! Rodney knew Elvet since he was a kid.

Our deepest condolences to the family for your loss. Heaven has gained an angel voice in their choir. May family fill their sadness with beautiful memories knowing some day there will certainly be a great reunion. Until that day may God's promises give you peace.

I am sending my sympathy to Elvets family. He was a great guy! I always enjoyed our conversations when he would come in my barber shop for a haircut. I am really going to miss his smile and laugh. I will be keeping you all in my prayers.
