I will always be deeply grateful to Dave for his mentorship of my development as a traditional Irish musician. He was extraordinarily helpful from the beginning of my interest in this genre in the mid 1990s when one of the best sources of information, advice, and guidance was a listserve: IRTRAD-L. Dave was one of the most prominent members of that email group. You could post a question and usually several experts such as Dave would respond. Dave's responses were always valuable and helpful and a generous use of his time. It was some time before I realized that Dave lived only about 1-1/2 hour away from me and I eventually learned that he hosted traditional Irish music sessions in Fort Wayne, IN. My wife and I started attending those and Dave and his wife would often attend the sessions that Mary and I hosted in Bowling Green, Ohio. Dave performed with us occasionally and introduced me to the uilleann pipes, a unique type of bagpipe traditional to Ireland. He also eventually convinced me that it was worth trying to learn to play them and even lent me a set so I could be sure it was something I wanted to do badly enough to justify the cost of buying my own set. Dave also gave me some instructions about playing the instrument that helped me get over a few of the initial humps. I will always remember Dave as a most generous, knowledgeable, and capable musician and friend and I miss him much. Rest well and joyously, Dave. You have earned it.

David played in our traditional Irish music ensemble, Toraigh, and was one of our best loved and most accomplished musicians. He also attended many of our music sessions, most recently at Logan's Irish Pub in Findlay. We always enjoyed playing music and interacting with David. He was easy going and fun to have around. He was always kind-hearted and readily adaptable to fit the needs of the group. I treasured his contributions to our music. I very deeply miss him. He leaves a gap in my musical world that will never be filled.
