Thomas Young Obituary

Thomas H. Young

Thomas H. "Tom" Young, 77, of Fostoria, passed away Monday, Jan. 8, 2024.

He was born April 20, 1947, in West Chester, Pennsylvania, to John and Ethel (Bagshaw) Young.

He is survived by his daughter, Lindsay Galandiuk of Toledo; son, Steven Young of Westland, Michigan; brother, Robert (Linda) Young; and sister, Patricia (Jerry) Gallant.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Ethel and John Young; brother, John Young Jr.; and sister, Linda Wenzel.

His grandfather, Arthur Bagshaw, was the postmaster at the Glenloch train station in West Chester, Pennsylvania. He therefore spent the first years of his life living at this train station. He arrived in Ohio when his father's job transferred him to Canton and then Findlay. Tom was a 1965 graduate of Findlay High School and then served in U.S. Army in Vietnam, starting in 1967. He witnessed atrocities of war there, but he described his job there as the best in Vietnam. He was the guy who sent soldiers home. After arriving home himself, he worked in broadcasting for local radio and television stations. Tom was best known as the traffic reporter in Toledo, in which he was flown over the city in a single engine plane and reported on the traffic. He later became the chief engineer for WSPD radio and then the engineering supervisor for Channel 13 WTVG. He also held an amateur radio and pilot license. His call sign for amateur ratio was W8THY and many worldwide have conversed with him this way. Although this is an extremely small window into the details of his experiences, one can see how Tom led what could be described as an unusual and interesting life that made him an unusual and interesting person. He will be missed.

Tom was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1994 and its slow progression took many things from him over the course of several decades. As a result, Tom promoted the cause of funding MS research. As such, in lieu of flowers, we request that a donation be made to the national MS society (nationalmssociety.org) on Tom's behalf.

There will be no services.

Tom was a friend and a radio colleague. My first radio job was at WFIN-AM/FM, filling Tom's position when he received his draft notice. Tom stayed on for awhile, helping me learn the ropes. After Tom's return from the Army, Tom was instrumental in helping me join him at WSPD-AM. He was a good collague and friend. Gone too soon.
