Stephen Gamby Obituary

Stephen Michael Gamby

Stephen Michael Gamby, 68, passed away peacefully at his home in Williamsburg, Virginia, Monday, October 6, 2025, with his devoted wife, Patricia, by his side. He and Pat originally lived near Carey, later moved to Mount Victory in 1990, and retired to Williamsburg in 2021.

He was born November 24, 1956, in Port Hueneme, California, to the late Carolyn Gamby and Richard Gamby, who survive him. Steve was a beloved husband, son, brother, father, "Papa," and friend whose presence brought warmth and laughter to all who knew him.

Steve was blessed to share his life with his high school sweetheart, Pat. They were married November 30, 1974, and together they built a beautiful life, celebrating over 50 years of love, devotion, and family. Pat was faithfully by his side throughout their journey together and lovingly held his hand as he entered eternal rest.

A talented athlete, Steve was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the 11th round of the 1974 MLB June Amateur Draft from Carey High School (Carey, Ohio). He went on to play several years in the minor leagues before returning home to dedicate over 40 years to farming, including more than 30 years milking cows. Steve was exceptional at balancing family life and the farm, rarely missing his children's sporting events, often milking at midnight and noon to be present at games. He also spent countless hours working with his children on their athletic careers, teaching them not only the value of dedication and hard work but also how to enjoy the game.

In retirement, Steve greatly enjoyed watching ball games, as well as hunting and fishing. He also found joy in baking sourdough bread and making noodles, generously sharing with family and friends. His humorous spirit, quick wit, and love of making others laugh were hallmarks of his character.

He is survived by his wife, Pat Gamby; his father, Richard; siblings, Richard Gamby Jr. (preceded in death by his wife, Cindy) of Defiance, Janet Gamby Keister of Delaware, Maryann (Dave) Fredritz of Carey, and Mark Gamby of Carey. Steve was a proud and loving father to his three children, Mike Gamby (Abby) of Marysville, Kristin Chilcott (Mark) of Williamsburg, Virginia, and Rebecca Weaver (Brad) of Upper Sandusky. His greatest joy was being "Papa" to his grandchildren, Brooklyn and Brady Gamby, Gemma and Dexter Chilcott, and Murphy and Marshall Weaver.

He will be remembered for his deep love of family, his humorous nature, and the countless ways he brought joy to others. Steve's legacy lives on in his children and grandchildren, who will carry his memory in their hearts forever.

Funeral arrange-ments will be shared with family and friends at a later date.
