Rex Tong Obituary

Rex Phillip Tong

Rex Phillip Tong, 84, of Findlay, died Wednesday, July 17, 2024.

He was born July 29, 1939, in Carey, to Winfield and Helen (Wyatt) Tong. He married Patricia Diane (Predmore) Tong and she survives.

Rex is also survived by his sons, Robert (Michelle Gessner) and Steven (Ann) Tong of Findlay; four grandchildren, Anthony, Alexandria, Joshua, and Sarah; two great-grandchildren, Rowan and Rhett; and three nephews, Reid, Ronald, and Timothy Tong.

He was a graduate of Findlay High School. Rex was a member of Ohio International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 18 since 1960, and from 1956-1964, served in Ohio National Guard. He was baptized at Christ Lutheran Church, Carey, and attended Shepherd of the Desert Lutheran Church in Sun City, Arizona. For many years, he drove sprint cars and was a former owner of Millstream Motor Speedway.

A lifelong lover of history, Rex belonged to many organizations, such as Black Swamp Gun Club, Pioneer Auto Club, Model T Ford Club, and Collectors of Findlay Glass Club, as well as holding a private pilot's license. He was an avid collector of Findlay Glass and Bell Pottery and enjoyed going to auctions and antique malls in search of "treasures." He also enjoyed spending time with his friends, whether through his daily visits to the coffee house, or through his memberships with Moose Lodge and American Legion. In his free time, he also loved hunting and fishing.

Rex's graveside service will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 23, 2024, at Spring Grove Cemetery, Carey, where full military rites will be conducted by Hancock County Memorial Squad. Pastor Dan Metzger will officiate.

Memorial contributions may be made to Bridge Hospice.
