David Smiley Obituary

David Smiley
Born: June 6, 1951 in Iowa Falls, IA
Died: January 5, 2023 in Princeton, IL
Princeton – David L Smiley, 71, passed away on January 5, 2023, surrounded by his loving family after a year-long, hard-fought battle with cancer.
David was born on June 6, 1951 to the late Lloyd and Marjorie (Holt) Smiley in Iowa Falls, IA. He was a graduate of Iowa Falls High School, Class of 1969. He also graduated from Winona State College. He married his Love Sharon West on January 13, 1986 in Las Vegas, NV.
He worked as a high school teacher in the Chicago Suburbs after College. He then took a job working in Hospitality hotel industry. He liked it so much that he gave up teaching and started his career working in hotels for over 40 years. After retirement he went back to Princeton High School working with Special Education Students. He really loved working with the kids and helping them find jobs.
David loved fishing and golfing with his buddy Steve Arkels. Those two together, you couldn't get a word in edgewise and the laughs never stopped. They were a couple of crazy guys and would keep everyone cracking up. He also enjoyed gardening, planting his vegetables every spring and sharing his bounty with family and friends.
He is survived by his wife of 36 plus years, Sharon West; two daughters, Kristen Fournier of California and Kara Smiley of Chicago, IL.; five grandchildren; one brother Dennis (Beverly) Smiley of Cedar Falls, IA and sisters Linda Sneed of California; Kathy Bolgren of Iowa and sister Charlotte (John) Zieman of Overland Park, KS.; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins whom he loved dearly.
Preceding his in death were his parents, Lloyd and Marjorie Smiley, one grandson, Nicky Vingren, one sister Carolyn Reisen, and two brothers-in-law, Ed Reisen and Bernie Sneed.
Special thanks to all of our wonderful neighbors that reached out to us and helped in anything we needed.
At this time, cremations rites are accorded and the family will be holding a celebration of life at a later date and time.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family for charitable distribution.
