John Conrad Dahl
John Conrad Dahl, 89, of Apple Valley, Minnesota, died Saturday, Jan. 28, 2023, at home surrounded by his family.
He was born April 9, 1933, in
Kennedy, Minnesota, the son of Conrad and Alma Dahl. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Maria Lutheran Church in Kennedy. He graduated in 1951 from Kennedy High School and in 1958 from Gustavus Adolphus College in
St. Peter, Minnesota.
John was drafted into U.S. Army on June 17, 1953, and was first stationed in
Augusta, Georgia. He was transferred to the Army Security School at Ft. Devens, Massachusetts, then to United Nations Far East Headquarters in Tokyo, Japan. He was honorably discharged in May, 1955.
John married Elizabeth Johnson on Aug. 8, 1959. Upon graduation from college, John was hired by Whirlpool Corp. in
St. Paul, Minnesota, starting in the engineering laboratory and, during his 35 years with the company through ambition and skill, earned his way to a senior leadership position. During his career with Whirlpool, John and his family lived for three years in
St. Joseph, Minnesota, then in Findlay, where he and his wife raised their family.
After retirement, he and his wife moved to Apple Valley, Minnesota. John was active in his community, serving on various church boards, Salvation Army board, and United Way board. He enjoyed hunting and "hanging out with the guys" at Four Squares Camp. He went on many fishing trips with family and friends at Lake of the Woods and in southern Florida in the winter. He spent many days boating on Lake Erie, where the family had a summer home.
John is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; children, Caroline Dahl (Jeff) of
Boston, Massachusetts, and David Dahl (Christie) of
Chicago, Illinois; granddaughter, Emma; sister-in-law, Maxine Johnson; and many wonderful nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
John was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Byron (Betsey) Dahl and Robert (Jeanne) Dahl; sisters, Carol (Evan) Tews and Marian (William) Edgett; and brother-in-law, Harris Johnson.
John's celebration of life service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, May 28, 2023, at Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church, 12650 Johnny Cake Ridge Rd., Apple Valley, Minnesota. Visitation will be 1-2 p.m. Sunday at the church. Interment will be at Fort Snelling National Cemetery.
