Gregory Routson Obituary

Gregory J. Routson

Gregory John Routson died Sunday, Feb. 19, 2023, while residing in Bohol Providence, Philippines, with his companion, Maricel Apoa.

Greg was born April 25, 1955, in Findlay, the third son of Robert J. and Bonnie J. Routson.

Greg is survived by his daughter, Morgan of Columbus; and five brothers, Robert (Ellen), Reginald (Barbara), James (Kimberly), Todd (Judy), and Jason.

Greg was preceded in death by his wife, Susan (Herrmann); and his parents.

A Findlay native, Greg and his brothers grew up next his grandparents, "Pop" and Nellie Routson, and only three houses away from three cousins, Jeff, Randy, and Tommy. The "Routson Boys" as they were known, ruled the neighborhood near the intersection of Wilson Street and Lawn Avenue. That was until their grandmother, Nellie, stepped onto her porch.

Greg graduated from Findlay High School in 1973 and later made a difficult career shift by attending Ohio State University and later obtained a degree in Mortuary Science from Cincinnati Mortuary School in 1982. Upon graduation, Greg began his career as funeral director, working at Baker Funeral Home, Berea, eventually establishing Routson Funeral Chapel, Findlay, in 1995.

Greg loved creatures of all kinds. Be it a bird, cat, tarantula, or his beloved Great Dane, Pokey, he took them all in. Greg was generous to a fault. Once, he gave an expensive racing bicycle to a needy homeless man so he could have transportation. The only problem was the bike belonged to his brother, Reg.

Greg fought many demons, and, like us all, had his issues, but when duty called he stepped up to devote himself to the care of his mother in her declining years. His care extended the quality of her life immeasurably. Although he is now at peace, we will miss him dearly.

Memorials in his name can be made to Humane Society of Hancock County, 4550 Fostoria Rd., Findlay.
