Gary Dukes Obituary

Gary Lee Dukes

Gary Lee Dukes, 71, of Hilliard, passed away at Kobacker House in Columbus, Friday, September 19, 2025. He was born October 11, 1953, in Findlay, to late Malcolm and Dorothy (Hartranft) Dukes.

Survivors include his brother, R. Craig Dukes of Findlay; a nephew, Matt Dukes of Findlay; and a great-niece, Haylee Dukes of Lima.

Gary began his teaching career at Vanlue High School. He spent most of his career as a guidance counselor at Brook Park Middle School with the Southwest City School District. Gary was a beacon of hope to both students and teachers during those difficult middle school years. He was an advisor to the youth-to-youth, alcohol- and drug-free club and attended many of the students' sporting events, plays, and music performances, as well as PTA meetings. He also took eighth-grade students to Washington, DC. Gary was loved by all of his many students, staff, and parents in the community.

Gary's family would like to thank Riverside Hospital and Kobacker House for the excellent care and comfort they provided to Gary in his final days.

Burial will take place at a later date at St. Michael Catholic Cemetery, Findlay. A celebration of life will also be in Columbus at a later date.

Memorials may be directed to a charity of the donor's choice.

Gary worked with me at Vanlue High School in the 1970's. He was always very pleasant and well-liked. He entertained all of us in the teachers' lounge with his experiences buying a new car. My condolences to his family.

I met Gary in 1980 at Brookpark Middle School, when we were both newly hired by SWCS. Gary and I, along with several other teachers became great friends and have many fond memories getting together over the years. Gary was the most incredible counselor I´ve ever met in my life. He had a gift for building relationships with middle school students! RIP my dear friend! You have more than earned your spot in heaven!
