Elizabeth Jane "Betty" Hennessy
Elizabeth Jane "Betty" Hennessy, 92, of Carey, passed away Wednesday, May 14, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.
Betty was born May 27, 1932, in Canton, to the late Ralph and Helen (O'Neil) Seikel. She married Thomas Hennessy on August 4, 1956, at St. John Catholic Church in Canton, and he preceded her in death November 18, 2007.
Betty is survived by her six children, Thomas Hennessy, Kevin (Janeen) Hennessy, Martin (Alice) Hennessy, Jeannie (Joel) Brown, Ralph Hennessy, and Kathryn (Dean) Plott; 12 grandchildren, Aaron, Krystel, Andrew, Michael, Sarah, Bernie, Nathan, Nicholas, Evan, Abby, Lexi and Emersyn; and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by an infant son, William Paul Hennessy; and brothers, the Rev. Ralph Seikel and Paul Seikel.
Betty was a 1950 graduate of Central Catholic High School in Canton. She then furthered her education by attending and graduating from Ursuline College with a major in home economics in 1954. Betty began her teaching career as a first-grade teacher in Parma. She then taught a year at Central Catholic and another in Monroeville before starting her family. She moved to Carey in 1966. Betty spent many years volunteering and teaching at Our Lady of Consolation School. She served as the school librarian, a substitute teacher, and a CCD teacher. She began teaching fourth grade in 1984 and helped start the Our Lady of Consolation Kindergarten program in 1997. She taught kindergarten for free for the first three years. Upon retirement in 2001, she volunteered as a kindergarten aide until 2020. Betty loved teaching and being a vital part of a young child's education. Betty was a faithful member of the Basilica of Our Lady of Consolation in Carey, where she was a member of the Altar Rosary Society. Betty's life was devoted to her family; she was a tremendous seamstress, quilter, painter, and baker. She made the best chocolate chip cookies, rolls, pumpkin and apple pies. She loved having a delicious side of vanilla ice cream. But more than anything cherished the time she spent with those she loved.
Visitation for Betty will be from 3-6 p.m. Sunday, May 18, 2025, at Stombaugh-Batton & Snyder Funeral Home, Carey.
