Ed Hyland

Ed Hyland, 79, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2024, in Findlay. His family and friends will remember him for his dedication to his loved ones, strong work ethic, and loyalty.

Edward Francis Hyland was born May 22, 1945, to Mae and Leo Hyland of Lakewood. He was an adored baby brother to his siblings, Leo, Peggy, and Jack. He grew up supported by aunts Kitty, Julie, and Florence, and his namesake uncle, Eddie Mangan. In turn, he became a beloved "Uncle Eddie" to 19 nieces and nephews. In 2016, he married Maxine Mazza and they enjoyed retirement together.

Ed is survived by his wife, Maxine; son, Wesley (Kayt) Hyland; daughter, Katie (Jacob) Dodson; three grandchildren, Micah, Aubrie, and Hannah. Ed will be missed by Maxine's children, Lisa (Mike) Kirk, and Jeff (Jenn) Ramsey; and grandchildren, Levi, Lexi, Ella, and Ava. Ed was honored to call Lemuel Roberts his lifelong friend.

Ed attended Cathedral Latin High School where he played basketball and football. He continued his basketball career at Heidelberg College where he served as captain his senior year. He was a member of Excelsior Men's Society and was nicknamed "Socrates". It was at Heidelberg where he met Pam Frank, whom he married on Aug. 17, 1968. They enjoyed 36 years of marriage together before her death in 2005.

Throughout his life, Ed endorsed the value of higher education, earning his master's degree from Bowling Green State University and his doctorate degree from The University of Toledo. He served in many capacities in higher ed at Defiance College, Heidelberg University, and The University of Findlay.

Ed embraced each day with a smile as if he knew a secret of grand proportions, waiting for the right moment to share it with the world. Ed and I worked together on several projects in higher education. He was thoughtful, caring, and concerned with accuracy and fairness, and he approached every assignment with extreme professionalism. He was a mentor, friend, and colleague. He will be missed. Rest in peace, my friend.
