Donna Abshier Obituary

Donna J. Abshier

Donna J. Abshier of Leipsic and formerly of Findlay, passed away on the evening of Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2023, at Bridge Hospice Care Center, Findlay.

Born on December 27, 1937 in Carmi, Illinois, Donna was the second of four daughters born to the late Arnold M. and Cuma L. (Spencer) Ziegler. She graduated from Carmi High School in 1955 and planned to become a nurse. However, at that time, a woman could not be married and attend Nursing School at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, Indiana, so she relinquished that dream and married Joe F. Abshier on Nov. 18, 1955. They celebrated 58 years together before he preceded her in death Nov. 12, 2013.

Donna found a career working in dental offices and worked locally for Dr. Joe Green and at Findlay Pediatric Dentists for Dr. Jack Winters. Following her retirement from that career, Donna endeavored to become a bookbinder. She first studied under an Amish bookbinder in Holmes County, then traveled to Texas and studied for an extended time under a master bookbinder. She returned home and opened Abshier's Bindery in Findlay. She was a member of Findlay's Women of Wall Street. She was also a member and past President of The Findlay Ladies Shrine Club, as well as a member of Dendarah Court #10 in Toledo. Together, Joe and Donna attended Christ United Methodist Church and College First Church of God, both in Findlay. She loved to sew and read and treasured time together with family. She was especially grateful for the past four years of living together with her sister, Rita, both in Findlay and Leipsic.

She is survived by two children, Liz (Don) Huston of Pandora and Mike Abshier of Arlington; as well as two grandsons, James (Brittany) Huston of Florida and Will Huston of Pandora. Her youngest sister Rita Wilson survives in Leipsic Several nieces and nephews and other family members survive her..

In addition to her husband and parents, Donna is predeceased by sister, Arna Pauline; sister and brother-in-law, Leah and Robert Nelson; brother-in-law, Tom Wilson; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Wayne and Lynna Abshier.

The family would like to thank the entire staff at Meadows of Leipsic for their expert loving care of mom this past year. We would also like to extend a huge thanks to Dr. Jacobus and the staff of Bridge Hospice, with very special thanks to her comfort caregivers, Jessica, Ashley, and Marcia. Many thanks to the staff of Bridge Hospice Care Center for making mom's passing so peaceful. You are all the ultimate in professionalism and compassion and we are extremely grateful.

There will be no visitation or funeral. The family will hold a private memorial service and burial will be in Illinois at a future date.

The family requests memorial contributions be made to Bridge Home Health and Hospice of Findlay, 15100 Birchaven Lane, Findlay, Ohio, 45840.
