Donald L. "Don" Traxler, 87, of Ada, passed away Thursday, Jan. 18, 2024, at Vancrest of Ada.

He was born April 28, 1936, in Crane Township, Wyandot County, to Albert N. and Garnetta (Kinley) Traxler. He married Myra I. Hiett on Aug. 9, 1964, and she preceded him in death July 2, 2007.

Don spent most of his life in education. He retired from Ohio Northern University in 1992, where he was a Professor of Education. He formerly worked for Wood County Schools, Grand Rapids Elementary School, Harrod School, and Elyria City Schools. He was a 1954 graduate of Salem Local School. He then received his B.S. in Education in 1958 and his M.S. in Education in 1965 from Bowling Green State University and his PH.D. from The Ohio State University in 1987. Don was proud to have served as Freddie Falcon for football in 1956. Don was also active in the Ohio Education Association and served as president, the Democratic Party, and Hardin County Board of Elections. Don was head of the Dept of Education/ONU when I worked there as a student in the early 80's. He loved to tease me. :) He was always upbeat and encouraging, and seemed to know something or have a story to share about any subject or place that came up in conversation. He helped me, as a new student, feel so accepted and he inspired confidence in me during my transition to college life with his easy manner. He and his wife often welcomed many of us (students) into their home for meetings or for casual dinners. He was very supportive and was a positive influence during the short time that I knew him. I was so saddened to hear of his passing. My deepest sympathy and condolences to his family. Our prayers are with you.

Don was a big influence in my life as a young man attending ONU. He was my academic advisor, but more importantly, a friend I could lean on during difficult times. I am proud to say I am currently in my 40th year of education and basketball coaching. Don is one of the biggest reasons I made it in the educational field! I owe him so much! Whenever he saw me at basketball tournaments in later years, he would warmly greet me with a smile...and usually a wisecrack! LOL! He will be missed. My condolences to Ty and the family.

Don was the consummate educational leader and activist. He was deeply passionate and committed to the success of educators, students, and public education, and we were so fortunate to have him continue his activism in OEA and NWOEA for decades after his term as president of the Ohio Education Association. I consider myself lucky to have benefitted from his stories and the example he set for never walking away from a cause he believed in. Ty and family, our thoughts and prayers are with you. I know nothing gave him greater pride than his family.

Too many memories to be shared here. Don was one of my favorite teachers (8th grade math and science). He was a cheerleader for everyone and remained interested in the lives of all of his former students. I was blessed to spend a day with him a few years ago when he was passing through Philadelphia. We stayed in touch after that, and I am proud that he considered me a friend. Always a smile on his face, Don's way with people was always to lift them up, never to put them down. We could use a lot more of that now. Ty, as you know, you and your family were the light and pride of his life. Blessings to you all now.

I knew Don as a Democrat and race fan. In recent treats I’d often run into him where my sons were racing. He always had a smile and funny story to tell. I’m

It was a true honor to get to know Don through our Falcon Mascot Alumni gatherings. He shared so many stories about Bowling Green and sports in general. He was a fine gentleman and natural entertainer. He will be missed by the Freddie & Frieda Falcon Family. Our thoughts and prayers go out for him and to his family and friends. Ay Ziggy Zoomba! Thinking of Ty, Heather, Andrew and Owen. Always enjoyed your dad and always knew he was in the crowd when I coached against you. Wishing peace to Don, I’m certain he’s happy to be back with your mom.

Traxler family - Don was truly one of a kind. He had so much passion for the things he cared about, and he helped open doors for me in my political and person life! I will miss Don very much. Please know you are all in my thoughts and prayers.

I have so many memories of my one and only brother I don't know where to begin. Mostly what I will miss is the many phone calls he would make to me and the statistics he had buried in his head from so many athletic events he attended over the years, be it high school, college or professional. The thousands of people he met in his lifetime and the relationships he formed with former presidents, OEA & NEA people. He was a great singer when it came to wishing you a HAPPY BIRTHDAY!! Don, one day I will see you again, in the meantime, take good care of Myra and the babies. I am proud to be your "baby" sister.
