Dennis Dehning Obituary

Dennis Dehning, 74, of Hazel Crest, IL, passed away peacefully at his home on January 26, 2025, while watching football—something he truly loved.

Born on July 4, 1950, Dennis was a devoted husband, loving father, cherished grandfather, and a steadfast friend. He shared a beautiful life with his wife, Gay, and was the proud father of Christopher (Patti) Dehning and Angela (Ryan) Rayhill. Dennis took immense joy in his role as 'Grandpa/Pop' to his beloved grandchildren Brooklyn Rayhill, Bryleigh Rayhill, and Christopher (CJ) Dehning.

Dennis was a hard worker throughout his life. He spent 20 years as a pipe fitter at Illinois Central Railroad, where he built a reputation for his dedication and craftsmanship. He also served as a head coach at Seton Academy, mentoring and inspiring young athletes. In his later years, Dennis enjoyed working as a golf ranger/starter at Lincoln Oaks for 10 years, combining his love of the game with his friendly and welcoming spirit.

Dennis is survived by his brothers Don (Kim) Dehning and Howard (Jackie) Dehning, and his sister Lisa (Jay) Truesdale and a large and loving extended family, including his nieces Jennifer Truesdale, Shannon Castillo, Kristi Lund, Sarah Anello, Lydia Lofstrom and Emilee Hornburg, as well as his nephews Brian Truesdale, Kyle Truesdale, Jaice Dehning, Jordan Dehning, and Zachery Hornburg.

A lifelong sports enthusiast, Dennis was a passionate fan of the Indiana Hoosiers/Bobby Knight, Texas Tech, Chicago Cubs, and Duke Blue Devils. When he wasn’t cheering for his favorite teams, he loved playing bean bags, coaching softball, basketball, and fostering a spirit of camaraderie with friends and family.

Dennis’ legacy is one of love, kindness, and dedication to the people he held dear. He will be remembered for his vibrant personality, unwavering support, and the joy he brought to every gathering.

A wake service will be held at Tews-Ryan Funeral Home, 18230 Dixie Highway, Homewood, IL 60430, on February 2nd from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM. A memorial service for Dennis' life will take place St. Paul's Lutheran Church 330 W. Highland Drive, Chicago Heights, IL 60411 at 10am on Feb. 3rd. Followed by a burial service at Saint Pauls Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery 1443 Western Avenue, Flossmoor, IL 60422

Rest in peace, Dennis. You leave behind a lifetime of wonderful memories and a family forever grateful for your love and guidance.

Remember Dennis when we both attended St Johns Lutheran Church and school. Dennis was six years older than me, but what a great athlete. He excelled at basketball, football and baseball and taught me a lot about all sports. He took time with me since I was younger and loved competing. We also played basketball together on the church team. Will miss you Dennis.

Really sad news. I guess we feel we will live forever. We had the IC, softball and the Cubs in common. Hamms beer for Dennis, Old Style beer for me. Great memories, great guy. Rest in peace my friend. Heartfelt sympathy to Gay and the family.

I’m so sorry for your family’s loss. Coach Dehning was an awesome coach and always treated us like his own. He incited a passion for the game in a lot of us. He particularly enjoyed wiffle ball and batting cage practice haha.

I lived two blocks over from the Dehning's growing up on maple and Woodworth. Mr. Dehning was an excellent example of a husband, father and man. I'm blessed that I got to see the example he set and I'm also thankful that he allowed his son to be a friend to me.

We are so deeply sorry for your loss. Eileen,Gina,Christopher and myself have been remembering all the fun times we had at the (office). Especially when the girls were playing softball. He was in his element. I loved his competitiveness. Especially when playing bean bags. He was hilarious. He was always about family.

Dennis and I coached and rooted for our sons and daughters in their sporting events many years ago. Dennis was always energetic, passionate, fun, and just a great guy to be around. The kids always loved his enthusiasm and learned from his teaching. Most importantly you could tell how much Denny loved his family. Condolences to Gay, Chris, Angela, and other family members. God Bless you all.

My sincere and deepest condolences to you Angela and Gay & family. I played golf with Angela in college and Mr. Dehning was one of our biggest fans! He would drive all night to be at our tournament and support Angela and the team. He was the most kind man and I know he will be watching over all of his people. Angela your dad was always so so proud of you. Thinking of you during this difficult time.
