Cathy McCann Obituary

Catherine "Cathy" Anne McCann, 76, of Granger, IN passed away on February 10, 2025, at her home after her second courageous battle with cancer. She was born on September 1, 1948, in Excelsior, MN to the late Paul and Mary (Ivory) Weber. She married Francis (Fran) McCann on October 26, 1968, and he survives.
Cathy retired in 2010 from South Bend Community Schools where she was an elementary school teacher for many years. She attended St. Joseph Chapel, Holy Cross College.
She enjoyed relaxing and reading on the pier at the family's cottage on Stone Lake, attending any event with her family and especially the grandchildren, crafting with friends, and searching for treasures at boutiques and craft sales.
Cathy loved a fun meal out with family and friends. She looked forward to Thanksgivings and Lake Fest 4th of July celebrations with the grandkids and whoever else she could invite over. Cathy loved a gathering and always believed "the more the merrier."
She was the heart of a retired Eggleston School teachers group and organized a "happy hour" every Thursday at 4:30 - Fran and Cathy's "early bird" dinner time.
She had her endearing quirks, often making an order off the menu an adventure for the waitress, the rest of the table and herself. She also could not let a text chat end without asking one of her quizzical questions - keeping the conversation going even longer. And she couldn't resist letting her friends know when she got Wordle in three.
When Fran coached the Winona State, Indiana State and Notre Dame wrestling teams, she would treat the young men like family, going to the meets and cheering them on as their No. 1 fan.
Cathy would often run into her past students out in the community and give them a big hug. Her classrooms at Madison, Eggleston, Harrison and Clay Middle could sometimes overflow with stacks of papers and students' artwork but it was always a place where learning could be a joy.
Even into her 70s, Cathy would still be making friends while line dancing and cardio drumming.
She loved getting into her "jammies" in the early evening and curling up beside Fran while they watched the Chicago Cubs on TV.
She made her girls almost the spitting image of herself - kind, compassionate and full of life.
Cathy is survived by her husband, Francis and daughters, Stephanie (Jason) McCann Reid, Overland Park, KS, Kimberly (Jared) McCann Piper, Carmel, IN. She is also survived by her five grandchildren: Maryn, Benton, Sydney, Elyse and Kate. She is also survived by her sister, Jeanne (Greg) Leifermann, FL.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Robert Weber.
Visitation will be held at Palmer Funeral Home, Hickey Chapel, 17131 Cleveland Rd., South Bend, IN 46635 from 4 – 6 PM on Friday, February 28, 2025.
Cathy's funeral mass will be held at St. Joseph Chapel, Holy Cross College, 54515 St. Rd. 933, South Bend, IN at 10 AM on Saturday, March 1, 2025.
