Carolyn Green Obituary

Carolyn May Green

Carolyn May (Moyer) Green, 99, of Bluffton, passed away at 6:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 12, 2024.

She was born May 16, 1924, at home near Mt. Cory on the family farm to Fred and Salva (Steiner) Moyer. She was the youngest of three children.

She married Kenneth Green, also of Mt. Cory, on July 21, 1946, and they enjoyed 49 years of marriage before his passing in Jan., 1996. Ken and Carolyn had known each other since the second grade and both graduated from Mt. Cory High School in 1942.

Carolyn graduated from Bowling Green State University in 1946 with a degree in Home Economics. Her teaching career was long and involved different age groups. At Pemberville Local Schools (1946-1948), she taught home economics and also supervised the cafeteria and canning of vegetables by parents and staff for school meals in the winter. She was a substitute teacher for Ayersville Local and Defiance City Schools for many years and then taught second grade at Anthony Wayne Elementary in Defiance from 1962-1967. From 1967-1987, she taught junior high home economics for Bowling Green City Schools. Over the years, she helped hundreds of students develop their skills in reading, math, cooking, and sewing. Carolyn also enjoyed teaching adult education for many years to those that wanted to learn to sew at BGJHS on Monday nights before her retirement. She enjoyed years of friendship with the various teachers she taught with and had many tales from teaching.

Carolyn was an avid traveler throughout her life. She traveled the continental United States including Hawaii and Alaska, but enjoyed the New England area the best. After her sons were grown, she traveled to Europe four times and spent two weeks in Australia. She enjoyed her winter home in Lehigh Acres, Florida, for over 20 years.

Her memberships included the Eastern Star, Rawson Chapter, and the Child Conservation Club (CCL) of the Cory-Rawson area. She also enjoyed playing cards, belonging to Bridge clubs, Red Hatters, and Rook Clubs over the years as well as playing euchre with her family. After retirement, she enjoyed spending time with her many friends at Bluffton Senior Center, volunteering and serving on its board for many years, as well as being involved in various positions in her church. She took pride in the fact that she still lived at home and in her words "could get out and go" until recently. She had a "green thumb" and could make flowers or vegetables grow with what seemed like little coaxing.

Those left to cherish Carolyn's memory are her four sons, Ed (Judy) of Ottawa Hills, Dan (Ann) of Auburn, Indiana, Tim of Mt. Cory, and Terry of Bluffton; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Irene Green of Bluffton; and special cousin, Evelyn Reese of Pandora.

Carolyn was also preceded in death by her sister, Sara (Bill) Thomas; brother, Richard (Doneta) Moyer; and in-laws, Richard (Marjorie) Green, Bernard (Clorinda) Green, James Green, and Joan (Bob) Warren.

Carolyn's celebration of life will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 18, 2024, at Mt. Cory United Methodist Church (now Church of Faith). Pastor Mike Noggle will officiate. Interment will follow at Clymer Cemetery, Union Township, near Mt. Cory. Visitation will be 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2024, at Chiles-Laman Funeral & Cremation Services, Bluffton, and 10-11 a.m. Thursday at the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to Mt. Cory Church of Faith or Bluffton Senior Citizens Association where she was a long-time member of both.

Remember her calling all the students "sweetie" so we referred to her as Mrs. Sweetie Green. Learned so much from her. My favorite class. I still have my cup and saucer she gave me.

She taught all the Colaner kids...including Tom! She was very patient and I learned a lot in her classes. She took our class officers to Columbus for the FHA assembly for 3 days when I was in 8th grade. We had a blast. She was definitely one of my favorite teachers. She lived right down the street in the Westgate subdivision. She was a Bowling Green treasure. R.I.P. Mrs. Green
