Thomas E. Rutter

Thomas Edmund "Tom" Rutter, 81, of rural Arcadia, passed away Monday, May 29, 2023, at University of Tennessee Medical Center.

He was born July 11, 1941, in Deshler, to Clifford E. and Bertha (McMaster) Rutter. He married Margaret (Ebersole) Strausbaugh on Feb. 23, 1968, and she survives.

Tom is also survived by five children, Dr. Paul (Joan) Strausbaugh of Clifton Forge, Virginia, Jeffrey (Sue) Strausbaugh of Defiance, Lisa (Dave) Keller of Perrysville, Samuel (Gretchen) Strausbaugh of Defiance, and Matthew (Sarah) Rutter of Arcadia; 16 grandchildren, Caleb Rutter (fiance' Haley Southward), Christy (Jason) Fender, Erin Strausbaugh, Emily (Brad) Layne, Stan (Megan) Strausbaugh, Sarah (Joshua) Wagner, Jonathan (Sylvia) Keller, Andrew (Amy) Keller, Grace Keller, Daniel Keller, Sadie (Austin) Pillar, Spencer (Esther) Strausbaugh, Demma Strausbaugh, Noah Strausbaugh, and Quin Strausbaugh; 26 great-grandchildren; brother, Leonard (Darlene) Rutter; and sister-in-law, Ann Rutter.

He was preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter, Erica Strausbaugh; and brother, David Rutter.

He was a 1959 graduate of Deshler High School and received his Bachelor of Science degree from Northrop Institute of Technology in Los Angeles, California. He was a career pilot for 37 years and flew for Owens-Illinois for 25 years before retiring in 2001.

Tom served his country in U.S. Air Force from 1963-1966 in active duty and in U.S. Air Force Reserves until 1976.

He was a member of Findlay First Assembly of God and taught Sunday School for over 50 years and was an avid studier of the Scriptures and enjoyed sharing The Word with the younger generations. Tom enjoyed farming with his son, Matt, and his grandson, Caleb.

Tom's funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday, June 3, 2023, at Findlay First Assembly of God, 124 Ash Avenue, Findlay, with Pastor Glen Hammons officiating. Burial will follow at Arcadia Cemetery where Hancock County Veterans Memorial Squad will present full military rites. Visitation will be 2-8 p.m. Friday, June 2, 2023, at COLDREN-CRATES FUNERAL HOME and 10-11 a.m. Saturday at the church.
