Susan Benson
Susan Elaine Benson, 65, of Vermillion, South Dakota, passed away Saturday, Nov. 2, 2024, from the effects of frontotemporal dementia, in her home surrounded by her sons.
She was born Jan. 11, 1959, in Fostoria, Ohio to Gerald Clayton and Lucy Anne (Hale) Cook. Susane is a former resident of Clearfield, Utah, Mt. Gilead, Ohio, Prattville, Alabama, Sioux City, Iowa, and other locations. She was a 1977 graduate of Elmwood High School. Susan married Michael L Benson on April 8, 1978, in Bloomville, Ohio with the marriage being sealed for time and eternity at Washington DC Temple.
She is survived by her husband of 46 years, Michael of Vermillion; five sons, Aaron M Benson of Ammon, Idaho; Isaac D and Andrea Benson of Palouse, Washington; L Zachary and Allysia Benson of Castle Rock, Colorado; Benjamin B Benson and Raquel Barela of Woodstock, Georgia; and Andrew Didymus and Kista Benson of Tempe, Arizona; nine granddaughters; and three grandsons; six brothers; and two sisters, Steven and Coleen Cook, Bloomdale, Ohio; Deborah Cook, Emerson, Nebraska; Gary and Mary Cook, Bloomdale, Ohio; Kevin and Pam Cook, Sioux City, Iowa; Greg and Kathy Cook, Bloomdale, Ohio; Randy and Somchin Cook, Shakopee, Minnesota; Robin Whelchel, Vermillion, South Dakota.
She was preceded by her parents; and her younger sister, Cheryl Cook Sheeks.
Susan was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from her youth, and served over the years in various teaching capacities, as Relief Society president, compassionate service leader, and many other auxiliary presidencies working with children and youth. She was for many years an adult leader in the Boy Scouts of America.
Over the years she work as a licensed day care provider, scrapbook consultant, and as a radiology department clerk, but she most enjoyed working at home sewing, quilting, and baking. Her skills won several fair ribbons, the highlight being the blue ribbon at Alabama State Fair for her family famous cinnamon rolls.
Her funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 7, 2024, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 20 S. Mickelson Ave., Vermillion, with Nathan Bates officiating. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. at the church with burial to follow the service at Bluff View Cemetery, Vermillion, South Dakota.
