Stephen Wagner
Stephen "Steve" Wagner, age 78, passed away peacefully at home Friday,February 7, 2025.
Steve was born November 22, 1946, in Ashland to Paul and Isabelle (Schweyer) Wagner, who preceded him in death. He was a devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather, and a loyal friend to many. His kindness, dependability, and genuine care for others left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him.
In 1970, he married the love of his life, Ann (McGinty) Wagner, and together they recently celebrated 55 wonderful years of marriage. He was the beloved father of his daughter, Heidi Lynn Ansted, and father-in-law to her husband, Jeff Ansted. He was also a cherished grandfather to his two grandsons, Evan Jeffery and Grant Stephen Ansted. Steve adored watching Heidi grow up, always supporting her in every stage of life with pride and love. Later, his greatest joy was attending his grandsons' sporting events, following their journeys from youth leagues all the way to college, rarely missing a game despite the travel often involved.
Steve attended Ashland City Schools before graduating from Edgewater High School in Orlando, Florida, in 1964. Following high school, he proudly served in the United States Air Force from 1964 to 1968, stationed at Bergstrom Air Force Base and Osan Air Base in Korea. After his service, he enrolled at The Ohio State University, earning a degree in Business Administration in 1972, followed by an MBA in 1973. While at Ohio State Steve was a member of Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity.
Steve began his professional career with Marathon Oil Company in January 1974, dedicating 35 years of service to the company. Throughout his tenure, he held numerous positions across various departments and was stationed in multiple locations. He started at the corporate headquarters in Findlay and later transferred to the Robinson, Illinois, refinery, followed by assignments in Detroit, Michigan, and the Indianapolis, Indiana, refinery. His final transfer was to Columbus marketing office, where he continued his dedication to the company until his retirement. His loyalty, strong work ethic, and commitment to his profession were defining aspects of his life.
Steve was a man of many passions, but above all, he was an incredibly loyal friend. He valued the relationships he built throughout his life and was always the person others could count on. One of his greatest joys in retirement was spending time on the golf course. A passionate golfer, he spent many of his days playing with his close-knit group at Medallion Country Club, cherishing both the game and the camaraderie it brought. Steve was an avid Ohio State athletics fan; he was a season ticket holder for football games for 31 seasons. After retiring, he and Ann also enjoyed escaping the Ohio winters, spending a portion of their time in Sarasota, Florida, where they created lasting memories together.
Steve is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Kerry (Bob) Sadler, Peggy (the late Steve) Dove, Kathleen Kruty; and his brother-in-law, Tim (Sue) McGinty. He leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins, including Becky Anaya, Laura Wagner, and Elizabeth Wagner.
He is preceded in death by his mother-in-law, Betty (Dan McGinty) (Wade) Renneker; numerous uncles and aunts; his cousin, Tom Wagner; as well as one niece and two nephews.
Steve will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
