Richard Hoffman Obituary

Richard "Dick" Hoffman

Richard "Dick" Hoffman, 85, of Findlay, passed away Thursday, Sept. 12, 2024, at Ohio State University Medical Center in Columbus.

He was born April 27, 1939, to Euphemia and Harold Hoffman, and grew up in Ottawa, Ohio. Dick married the love of his life, Janice Ann (Feindel), on Aug. 20, 1961, after falling in love at Bowling Green State University and later marrying at Prout Chapel on the university's campus.

She survives along with their three children, Anne (James) Maynard, Richard (Kimberly) Hoffman, and Julie Hoffman (David Maltz); six grandchildren, Bethany (Michael) Ruff, Janelle Maynard (Mike Brown), Meghan (Kiel) Murphy, Nathan (Allison) Maynard, Gabrielle Maltz, and Ryan Maltz; and two great-grandsons, Ryan and Logan Ruff.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Kathy (Hoffman) Leist.

A lifelong learner, Dick was a 1957 graduate of Ottawa High School and 1961 graduate of Bowling Green State University where he received a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and was a member of Debate Club, ROTC, and Phi Kappa Delta Honorary Society. Additionally, Dick was a 1968 graduate of The Ohio State University where he received his Master of Business Administration. Upon graduation, Dick spent four years in active duty in U.S. Air Force as a First Lieutenant assigned to the Pacific Air Forces. He spent the majority of this time at a joint military base in Taiwan.

In 1977, Dick embarked upon his next opportunity and challenge and founded Appraisal Research Corporation, where he served as President and CEO for 46 years. His vast knowledge and expertise benefited many communities, primarily in Ohio and Indiana. Dick had a passion for his own continuing education, earning many professional certifications, designations, and awards including several from the International Association of Assessing Officers ("IAAO"). Most notably was the IAAO Fellow and IAAO Professional Development Lifetime Achievement Award. Dick had several articles published and shared his appraisal expertise in numerous presentations over the years.

Dick served on Ohio Real Estate Appraisal Board for two terms as well as Governor's Federally Subsidized Housing Study Committee. Dick was active in the community as a 32nd degree Mason, 50-year member of Elks Club, member of American Legion, and member of VFW. He also attended St. Mark's United Methodist Church.

Dick enjoyed spending time with family at the lake where he could be found reminding those around him "if a little is good, a lot is better," tinkering on his boat, and drinking a Manhattan on the deck.

Dick's celebration of life will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 27, 2024, at St. Mark's United Methodist Church, followed by a luncheon at Findlay Country Club.

Memorials can be made to the Richard H. Hoffman Scholarship fund, established for students pursuing business at Bowling Green State University through the Findlay-Hancock County Community Foundation.

I send my love and condolences to each of the family members and to the work members. I never had a boss such as Dick before or after. He would clean the kitchen sink and walked around on a comfortable day without shoes. Yet he was very happy and relaxed. He also had a great intelligence beyond compare. He made a difference in my life. Again I send you love and prayers of strength and comfort to each of you.

Dick and I worked together for years in the area of real estate education for Mass Appraisers. He was instrumental in mentoring me toward a professional designation. There was much more. Dick was a friendly and out going in the conduct of his professional activities. His family was equally cordial. May the love of friends bring all comfort until the love of God brings them peace.

Dick was one of my earliest and most impactful mentors I had as rookie County Auditor in 1995. I will always remember his protractor he used while explaining the real estate appraisal process and other topics. I know I was a better Auditor for his sharing of his knowledge and experiences of the Auditor's Office. Jan, our deepest condolences to you and your family.

Dick Hoffman is someone I will remember forever. When I was a young County Auditor, he co-hosted a CAUV meeting with me in Ross County. Farmers were angry at the news that their property taxes were going up, but Dick was able to speak their language and keep the meeting civil. He helped me more times than I can count and taught me to embrace every "challenge and opportunity" that comes my way. I'll miss you, Mr. Hoffman. Thanks for the memories

Jan, I am keeping you and your entire family in my thoughts and prayers. I hope you know how very, very special Dick was to my both personally and professionally. His multiple appointments and years of service on the Ohio Real Estate Appraiser Board were cherished by me and all who worked with him. My deepest sympathies,
