Mary Elizabeth "Betsy" Pry

Former Findlay resident, Betsy Pry, 82 of Pinehurst, North Carolina, died Thursday, August 14, 2025, at Dahlia Gardens Nursing Home, Aberdeen, North Carolina.

Betsy was born September 28, 1942, in Schenectady, New York, to the late Virginia (Blaser) and George Knapp Barrett.

Betsy is survived by her son, Barrett (Barry) Nicholas Pry, wife Lori, Pinehurst, North Carolina, and her cherished grandson, Nikolas (Nik) Cory Pry, wife Alexis and great-grandson Roman and beloved granddaughter Madison (Madi) Barrett Pry.

She is remembered with love by a sister, Sue (Barrett) Romero, husband Bob, Erie, Colorado and son Ted Romero, wife Lindsay and the family of late brother Bill Barrett who died in 2023, his wife, Susan and two children, Lindsey (Barrett) Sands, husband Abe and Chad Barrett, wife Melissa, nine great nieces and nephews and a loving group of friends back in Ohio.

Betsy grew up in Findlay and graduated from Findlay High School in 1960, where she was editor of the Blue and Gold newspaper, homecoming queen and active in many other activities.

Betsy graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1964 with a BA degree in elementary education. She was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, president of the Association of Women Students, wrote for the Transcript student newsletter, and was active in the Young Women's Christian Association and the Wesleyan Players.

After graduation, she taught elementary school in Ann Arbor, Michigan, before marrying her late husband Nik Pry in 1966.

In the mid-1970s, Betsy and Nik returned to Findlay, where Nik started his own accounting firm, Pry CPA and Pry Accounting and Financial Services. Both Betsy and Nik were very active in the Findlay community. Betsy was a founding member of the Findlay Service League, which still exists today. She was very involved with the University of Findlay's Mazza Museum, volunteering at many events over the years, which also supported educational programs in Hancock County. She and Nik sponsored the reading library in the children's reading loft at the Mazza Museum. Betsy was a board of trustee for the University of Findlay and was the past president of the Shakespeare Club. She served on the Congressional Board appointed by the House of Representatives, Mike Oxley, to nominate candidates to the military academies.

In 1997, Betsy earned an MA degree in education with an emphasis in children's literature from the University of Findlay.

In 2008, Betsy and Nik moved to Pinehurst, North Carolina, to be closer to their son, Barry, daughter-in-law Lori, and their grandchildren.

Betsy was a loving wife, mother and supportive grandmother and aunt attending many of her grandchildren's, nephews' and nieces' activities, sporting events, and educational endeavors in Ohio, North Carolina, and Colorado.

Yesterday

Betsy was the first person I met at a Findlay Service League meeting years ago. There I was sitting by myself, feeling a little awkward. Not know much about FSL but I thought I wanted to join. Along came Betsy, asked if she could set with me. Little did I know at the time that she was one of the founding women of the FSL.

I went on to volunteer for years in FSL, Zonta Club of Findlay, and other service organizations and I always remember that simple act of kindness. Whenever I attend a meeting and there is someone sitting by themselves, I sit down and introduce myself.

Carry it forward...
