Margaret L. Shumway

Margaret L. Shumway, 85, of Mt. Blanchard, died Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2023, at her residence.

She was born Oct. 13, 1937, in Port Clinton, the daughter of the late Lester and Esta (Edwards) Deer. She married Gerald Shumway on July 28, 1956, and he preceded her in death Jan. 1, 2009.

Margaret's survivors include her sons, Steve (Barb) Shumway, of Stow, Ohio, and Andrew (Mary Ruth) Shumway of Chagrin Falls, Ohio; daughter, Jonna Shumway of Mt. Blanchard; four grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and brother, Donald Deer.

Margaret was a member of St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, Findlay. Margaret was a teacher for 37 years. The last school she taught was at Keystone Academy in the Fostoria City Schools, retiring in 2002. She taught with her best friend, Libby Hoffman-Wiggington, and her esteemed colleague, George Tucker. She helped a lot of students achieve the dream of graduating that otherwise would not of had that chance. Margaret enjoyed traveling, gardening, and feeding people. She raised and showed Arabian Horses and enjoyed jitterbugging with her husband, Gerald.

Visitation will be 2-6 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 8, 2023, at COLDREN-CRATES FUNERAL HOME, Findlay, and 10-11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 9, 2023, at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, Bright Road. Mass of Christian burial will be 11 a.m. Monday with Father Peter Grodi as celebrant. Burial will follow later in the afternoon at St. Wendelin Cemetery, Fostoria. There will be a celebration of life in the spring at Margaret's farm.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed towards Hancock County Humane Society. Online condolences may be expressed at www.coldrencrates.com.

She taught at Owens in Fall 2011, remedial algebra. I got a "C" in the class, though that was much better than I did in high school or next semester. I remember the first day of class, she was surprised I made the twenty minute drive to school. I think she brought donuts for us all once. One of those teachers you remember when the time is right. I've since gone on and received my master's a couple years ago, in addition to a stint in law school. Not sure how many others in the class did that, but glad she was one of my first professors in college. Thanks for being patient with me!

Thank you for the opportunity to visit, enjoy your family and partake in Mrs. Shumway's birthday dinner. Her smile, sense of humor and wittiness was refreshing. George shares so many great memories of Mrs. Shumway, her influence, wisdom and humor. Her life was impactful to the trajectory of numerous lives. She will live on through her beloved family, coworkers and students she touched. As you celebrate her life, we pray comfort and peace to you.
