John Schalk Obituary

John C. Schalk

John C. Schalk, 78, of Fostoria, passed away Sunday, Feb. 26, 2023, at ProMedica Fostoria Community Hospital.

He was born June 4, 1944, in Tiffin, to the late Joseph A. and Helen F. (Steinmetz) Schalk. He married Jeanne A. Affholder on Nov. 25, 1967, at St. Wendelin Catholic Church and she survives in Fostoria.

John is also survived by five children, Andrew Schalk of Fostoria, Christy (Bradley) Long of Sycamore, Jennifer Shanks of Green Springs, Kenneth (Mison) Schalk of Columbus, and Suzanne (Jeffrey) Carson of Boston, Massachusetts; 14 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; siblings, Ann (Mark) Foos of Helena and Carl (Carolyn) Schalk of New Riegel; and sister-in-law, Peg Schalk.

He was also preceded in death by a brother, Peter Schalk.

John was a member of St. Wendelin Catholic Church, Fostoria, where he was a member of the church choir for 48 years and co-chair of the festival grounds where he volunteered there in many capacities including set-up and breakdown and manning the bratwurst stand. He was a graduate of New Riegel High School and worked at Atlas Crankshaft for 30 years and Norton Manufacturing for 17 years.

John enjoyed watching sports, including Ohio State Buckeyes, Cleveland Browns, and Cleveland Indians. He loved wintering with Jeanne in Florida, gardening, spending time outdoors, and being an active member of St. Wendelin. One of his greatest memories was the trip he took with the choir to Rome. He will be remembered as a loving husband and a "good guy."
