Janet Hickerson Obituary

Janet Netta Hickerson

Janet (Netta) Craig Hickerson, 89, of Findlay, died at 4:06 p.m. Sunday, December 28, 2025, at Birchaven Village.

Netta was born March 8, 1936, in Ayr, Scotland, to Thomas Craig and Margaret McKinlay. From the very beginning, Netta was spirited, bold, and unapologetically herself, a woman with grit, charm, and a spark that never dimmed.

In 1955, at just 19 years old, Netta met James Hickerson while she was touring Scotland and England as a professional figure skater. James was an American GI, and their meeting marked the beginning of a love story that would carry her across the ocean. Netta bravely left her homeland, traveling overseas by ship to begin a new life in America. Together, they raised six children and built a family that would grow to include five generations. Though Netta and James later divorced, they remained close friends and shared a deep bond until the very end.

Netta was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas Craig and Margaret McKinlay; three sisters and a brother, Moira, Jean, Sarah and Tommy; her beloved daughter, Sheila Hickerson Julien; and her grandson, Jason Cramer Naso.

She is survived by her children, Donna Farias, Lindy (Buck) Mosley, Jimmy (Toni) Hickerson, Dana Hickerson, and Shelly Hickerson, along with many grandchildren and extended family members who adored her.

For over 35 years, Netta worked as a bartender at numerous establishments, including Dixie Tavern, Old Dutch Tavern, and Dutch II, where she eventually retired. But bartending wasn't just a job to Netta; it was a lifestyle she craved right up until the very end. Behind the bar, she was in her element, sharp, flirty, quick-witted, and unmistakably the life of the party. She didn't just serve drinks; she built connections, friendships, and unforgettable nights.

Life of the party, Netta loved spending time at the Moose, Lucky's, and anywhere laughter and music filled the room. She especially loved karaoke and was often found singing her favorites, "Crazy" and "Swinging Doors" - performances that perfectly captured her spirit and confidence.

Netta was loved by many, but her greatest companion was her beloved cat, Hoyer, who brought her comfort and joy.

Netta's life was one of strength, resilience, and vibrant connection. She will be remembered for her fire, her fearless presence, and the way she made people feel alive just by being near her.

Netta passed peacefully, held in love, surrounded by family and friends. Honoring her wishes, her ashes will be returned to her homeland of Scotland.

A celebration of life will be at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Bridge Hospice in her honor. COLDREN-CRATES FUNERAL HOME, Findlay, is handling arrangements.
