James Hickerson Obituary

James R. Hickerson

James R. Hickerson of Findlay, passed away peacefully at his home Friday, May 16, 2025, at 2:13 a.m. at the age of 91. He was adopted and lovingly raised by Gail and Ruth (Deerwester) Hickerson.

At the age of 16, Jim proudly joined the United States Air Force, where he was stationed in Liverpool, England. It was there that he met and married his beloved "wee Scottish lass," Janet (Netta) Craig. Together, they had six children, Donna (Joe) Farias, the late Sheila Julien, Lindy (Buck) Mosely, Jimmy (Toni) Hickerson, Dana Hickerson, and Shelly Hickerson. Jim was also the proud father of Glynn (Valerie) Davis.

On March 6, 1974, Jim married June VanDenEynde. They traveled to Mississippi for the occasion, where June's daughter was living at the time. Jim is also survived by his stepchildren, Darrell Lanagan, Donna (Greg) Lichtle, and Debbie Cusac.

Jim leaves behind a legacy of love through his 27 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren. Later in life, he was blessed to reconnect with his biological sister, Pat Edwards. Jim's best friend was his dog, Sissy, who went everywhere with him.

He enjoyed trap shooting, feeding the squirrels, watching the deer, and was a true animal lover. He had been a member of Jaqua's Gun Club and for many years drove sprint and stock cars at Millstream Racetrack.

After his military service, Jim worked for Hobb Brothers before becoming an entrepreneur. He first co-founded J & J Trucking and later was owner/operator of Hickerson Excavating, retiring in 1996. In retirement, Jim and June became snowbirds, spending winters in Punta Gorda, Florida.

Jim was an avid collector of classic cars; a hobby that brought him great joy throughout his life.

When in Findlay, he had breakfast daily at Pilgrim Pancake House, and while in Florida, at Waffle House. He truly enjoyed the servers at each location.

He was a member of Findlay Moose Lodge No. 698, Findlay American Legion, and AMVETS.

Visitation will be from 11-6 p.m. Tuesday, May 20, 2025, and 10-11 a.m. Wednesday, May 21, 2025, at COLDREN-CRATES FUNERAL HOME in Findlay. Funeral services will start at the conclusion of visitation at 11 am. Pastor Mike VanDenEynde will officiate and interment will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery, where full military rites will be conducted by Hancock County Veterans Memorial Squad. A luncheon will be at Findlay Moose Lodge following the graveside services.

Memorials may be made to Cancer Patient Services or Bridge Hospice.

First of all you are very blessed to have your father of 91. My father is retired USCG and is also 91.
I was looking through my jewelry box JUST YESTERDAY when I came across a POW bracelet with your husband, father, grand father, great grandfather's, etc... name on it and decided to research the name. I cannot tell you how many years I wore this bracelet. I'm so sorry for your loss. It has the date of 12-22-67 on it which, I assume, was the date he was captured. I would absolutely love to hear the story. My cell number is 757-709-5436.
