James W. "Jim" Baughman

James Willis Baughman, 77, of Findlay, passed away Monday, Aug. 8, 2022, at his residence. He was born Sept. 10, 1944, in Findlay, to the late Gerald Leo and Della Beatrice (VanHorn) Baughman. Jim was a 1962 graduate of Vanlue High School and The Ohio State University in 1966. He was a teacher for 32 years, including 30 at Van Buren High School where he taught shop, photography, and printing. He helped with several musicals, layout of the school newsletter, bought and maintained the audiovisual equipment, as well as many other projects.

After retiring from teaching, Jim worked 16 years for Findlay Publishing Co. in the division of printing, where he did screen printing of t-shirts and embroidery work.

Jim helped to compile and print the book entitled "Vanlue Local Schools 100 years."

Jim was scoutmaster of Van Buren Troop 313 for 39 years. He and his troop attended Philmont Scout Ranch on six different occasions, and attended Double H Scout Ranch (both in New Mexico), as well as many summer trips to numerous states. In 1997, he was Scoutmaster for the council contingent troop for the National Jamboree and on staff there on three other Jamborees. In scouting, Jim was awarded many honors including Order of the Arrow Vigil Honor, Wood Badge, The Silver Beaver Award, as well as Hall of Leadership Award in 2010. He helped 49 scouts obtain Eagle Rank. He and his troop planned and oversaw the construction of Eugene Ensman Shelter House in the Village Square of Van Buren which was rededicated as James Baughman Pavilion on Aug. 7, 2022. They also oversaw the construction of the large Heminger Shelter House with a fireplace at Allen Township Center. The troop supervised the proper burning of approximately 32,950 American Flags. He has planned and supervised the annual Memorial Day program for the Van Buren community since 1971.

Sunday, Aug. 7, 2022, was proclaimed James Willis Baughman Day by Mayor Edward May for his long-standing service to Van Buren and it's citizens.

Jim was a member of Victorian Christmas Dinner Committee, which earns money for Hancock Historical Museum. He performed the role of Butler for many dinners and made many of the savories served at the dinners. He served as the treasurer (and baker) for Hancock County Retired Teachers Association.

Jim was a member of Salem Cass United Methodist Church, serving as a trustee and member of the Church Scholarship Committee.

Jim is survived by two brothers, Gerald R. Baughman of Raleigh, North Carolina, and Danny N. Baughman of Madison, Indiana; and sister, Judy K. Correll of Largo, Florida. He was preceded in death by his sister, Carol Jane Baughman.

Visitation will be 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 12, 2022, at COLDREN-CRATES FUNERAL HOME. Jim's funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 13, 2022 at COLDREN-CRATES FUNERAL HOME where visitation will also be 10-11 a.m. Pastor Dick Van Horn and Pastor Duane Kemerley will officiate. Burial will follow at Zion Bloom.
