Herbert Belgrad Obituary

Herbert Joseph Belgrad, attorney and community leader, died walking along his usual morning route on Sunday, April 6 at 90 years old.

Herb lived by the mantra that you only get out of something what you are willing to put into it. From childhood through high school and college, his professional career as an attorney, his many volunteer positions with the Baltimore and Maryland Bar Associations and Maryland Stadium Authority, and most importantly his family – his work ethic was unwavering.

Herb was born in Washington DC on February 3, 1935 to Harold S. Belgrad, a haberdasher, and Selma Gundersheimer Belgrad, a homemaker. He attended City College high school followed by Johns Hopkins where he graduated cum laude in 1956. Herb earned a Masters Degree from the University of Illinois on a fellowship in 1957 and a law degree from University of Maryland in 1961 where he was elected to the Order of the Coif. In addition to practicing law, he dedicated himself to community service in many roles for the Associated Jewish Charities, the Board of Jewish Education, the Maryland State Ethics Commission, the Board of the Maryland Legal Services Corporation, the Bar Association of Baltimore City, the Maryland State Bar Association, the American Bar Association, and the Maryland Stadium Authority.

Professionally, Mr. Belgrad was an assistant city solicitor from 1964 to 1968 and a partner at Tydings and Rosenberg from 1968 until his retirement in 2020.

Mr. Belgrad is survived by his wife of 65 years, Joanne Lott Belgrad and their three children, Steve, a financial professional in Seattle Washington, Susie, founder of a college and career non-profit organization, Access Opportunity, in Denver, Colorado, and Leslie, an oncology patient navigator and founder of Tides, a non-profit grief program in State College, PA. He also is survived by grandchildren – Jillian Belgrad and Humberto Ochoa, Tim Belgrad, Annie Hayes, Jack Hayes, Hannah and Bailey Ishler, and Sarah Finton.

Services at Sol Levinson's Chapel, 8900 Reisterstown Road, Pikesville, MD 21208, on Wednesday, April 9th, 2025, at 9:30 am. Interment Beth Tfiloh Cemetery. Please omit flowers.
