Gerald Wagner Obituary

Gerald "Jerry" Wagner

Gerald Harry Wagner, 98, affectionately known as "Popey," "Hobe," and "Jerry" throughout his life, passed on to a better place Monday, Feb. 19, 2024, in Wellston.

Jerry was born Oct. 6, 1925, in Columbus, to Harry and Marie (Korsenborn) Wagner. He graduated from Bidwell High School in Gallia County. He enlisted in U.S. Navy in 1944, serving in the Pacific Theater during World War II. Upon returning home, he enrolled in and graduated from Rio Grande College.

Jerry began teaching and coaching after college. His career led him to Cadmus, Coalton, Fairfield Union, Arlington, and Olentangy. His students and athletes still recall their memorable times with him. He started many sports programs at these schools, taught various subjects including shop and driver's education, and usually coached multiple sports. His basketball sideline antics were only outshone by his success on the court. He was inducted into Hancock County Sports Hall of Fame for his teams at Arlington.

Jerry could never sit still. He golfed and bowled into his 90s. He rode his motorcycle across the country and back with a friend. He won Gold Medals at the Senior Olympics. He was virtually a professional prankster with some saying his favorite day of the year was April Fools Day. In recent years, he showed an artistic side by taking up coloring and painting. He was a character in the very best sense of the word.

Jerry loved his family. He worked hard to provide for them. He raised three successful Christian children. He enjoyed vacationing with his ever growing family, especially heading to the beach or to the mountains with as many grandchildren as could make it that week. But most of all, Jerry showed his love during his 66-year marriage to his high school sweetheart.

He is survived by his daughter, Barbara (Edward) Brookover; daughters-in-law, Barbara Wagner and Cindy Wagner; grandchildren, Scott Wagner, Jason Wagner, Justin Wagner, Jennifer Anderson, Stacy Brookover and Kyle Wagner; and numerous great-grandchildren.

Gerald was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy (Russell); sons, Michael Wagner and Patrick Wagner; grandchildren, Sara Gast and Eddie Brookover; and brother, Albert Wagner.

Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Friday, March 1, 2024, at CRATES FUNERAL HOME, Arlington. Jerry's funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday, March 2, 2024, at the funeral home with Pastor Dan Metzger officiating. Interment will follow at Arlington Cemetery.

So many memories with your Dad and family. He was such a funny man and my Dad and your Dad were buddies for a long time in life working together. I am so sorry for loss. Bless you Barb.

Jerry was my Athletic Director when we both were at Arlington. He also was the basketball coach while I was the football coach. He was a great mentor to me as a new Head Coach as well as a friend! Jerry lived a full life and did it well!
