Elizabeth Schalk Obituary

Elizabeth Ann "Betty" Schalk

Elizabeth Ann (Betty) Schalk, 87, became the newest angel in Heaven at 8:10 am on Tuesday, June 21, 2022, while surrounded by family in her home.

She was born the youngest child of the late Louis E. & Marian F. (Meyer) Herb on May 17, 1935 in Sandusky, Ohio.

She graduated in 1953 from Sandusky St. Mary High School.

Betty married Eugene N. "Gene" Schalk on September 3, 1955 in St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sandusky, Ohio with Rev. Joseph Inkrott presiding.

She is survived by Gene Schalk, her husband of almost 67 years; three daughters, Linda S. (Alfredo Diaz) Schalk, Fremont, Marcia A. (Bradley) Walters, Pickerington, and Sandra K. (Christopher) Donahoe, Lakewood; two sons, Jeffry E. (Stacy) Schalk, Herndon, VA, and Nicholas E. (Berenice) Schalk, New Braunfels, TX; 12 grandchildren, Meghaan, Kathryn and Andrew Walters, Joshua and Adam (Katharine) Schalk, Marian, Aaron (Julie), Christin (Gabriel Brown), Brian, and Kellyn Donahoe, and Nicole and Matthew Schalk-Virgen; bonus son in Costa Rica, Rodolfo Solis, his wife Karla and sons Rodolfo José and Julian; stepsiblings, Marge Friemoth, Pat Briggs, Dwain (Barb) Hohman and Sharon Williamson; multiple special nieces and nephews; and many life-long friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; older brother, Richard C. Herb; and four sisters, Barbara E. Rengel, Audrey A. Ciresi, Marjory L. Herb, and Marilyn F. Allen.

Betty was a life-long homemaker and very proud of celebrating her 65th and 66th wedding anniversaries. Her hobbies included sewing, needlework, craft painting, Christmas decorating, reading, traveling and supporting her kids and grandkids in every one of their endeavors. She enjoyed camping with family and friends, playing Dominoes and various card games especially Pinochle, Euchre, and Kings-on-the-Corner. She was deeply devoted to the Blessed Mother and could always be counted on to light a candle for special prayers and intercessions. Betty was a very caring and faith-filled woman who inspired her kids by loving them unconditionally. She enjoyed accompanying Gene in traveling throughout the United States and many foreign lands.

She was a member of St. Wendelin Catholic Church, an Honorary Life Member of its Circle of Mercy and The Rosary Altar Society. She was a past United Way volunteer, served as parish council secretary and was a long time Camp Fire Board Member and Leader as well as a Boy Scout Den Mother. She was a proud mother and grandmother of five Eagle Scouts. She could be counted on to be present for school concerts and plays, athletic and academic competitions, matches and meets and could easily and recognizably be heard cheering on her kids and grandkids.

Mass of Christian burial will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, June 27, 2022, at St. Wendelin Catholic Church with the Reverend Nicholas Weibl presiding and Pastor the Very Reverend Joseph Poggemeyer and nephew the Reverend David Schalk concelebrating and Deacon Alfredo Diaz assisting at the altar. A rosary will be prayed at 9:30 am at the church. Burial will follow at St. Wendelin Catholic Cemetery.

Visitation will be Sunday, June 26, from 2 - 6 pm at Hoening and Son Funeral Home, 133 W. Tiffin St. Fostoria, Ohio. A Vigil Service will begin at 6:00 pm.

Memorials may be made in Betty's name to St. Wendelin Catholic Church, the Greater Fostoria Community Foundation or a charity of the donor's choice.

I was blessed with many wonderful childhood memories of Mrs. Schalk. I felt like she was the benevolent matriarch/Mother Teresa of our neighborhood. Her kindness and love knew no boundaries. My family and I will be forever grateful because we were so fortunate to have been enriched because of her. I send much love and many prayers to all you Schalk's.

I watched Betty as she raised her children with Gene. Nick was closest in age to my oldest, Andy. Betty showed me how to be a good mother. Her example was so powerful for me. We had many conversations on parenting. What a Lady. My sympathy to each of you. Be assured of my prayers for the repose of Betty´s soul. And will be praying for gentle peace for all of the family
