Edgar Ed von Schmidt-Pauli

Edgar "Ed" von Schmidt-Pauli, 89 years young, passed away peacefully in Virginia Beach Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2024, surrounded by love.

Born in New York City Feb. 20, 1935, Ed grew up in Great Neck, New York, and was proud of driving like a New Yorker. As a youngster, he kept busy with newspaper routes, mowing lawns, shoveling snow, sweeping floors, and working his way up to maitre d' at Lauraine Murphy's in Great Neck. He graduated from Great Neck High School, attended college at Adelphi, and graduated from NYU. He was drafted into the Army during the Korean War, serving as an MP and a bookkeeper, and had many fond memories of touring Europe in his VW while stationed there. After leaving the military, Ed worked for IBM in Manhattan for 17 years, then moved to Virginia Beach and spent another 10 years with the company. In retirement, he started a second career with Airetight while focusing on his children as they began their careers and families. He was the president of the neighborhood civic league and enjoyed community theater, being the communications coordinator for his high school class, and rooting for the Redskins and Virginia Tech.

A light that shone brightly in any room he was in, Ed was exceedingly kind, genuine and generous. He had a quick wit and a gift for injecting humor into any conversation or tense situation. His joy was spending time with his children, always putting them first and finding activities for them: the park, beach, museums, and bike rides. At their sporting and school events, he was their No. 1 fan.

Ed is survived by his beloved wife, Martha; his sons, Karl (Pam), Richard (Mindy) and Christian (Shelli); his grandchildren, Corinne, Jessica, Christopher, Sarah, Stephen, Matthew and Jack; and his brother, Tassilo von Schmidt-Pauli of Edina, Minnesota.

A memorial will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 16, 2024, at Eastern Shore Chapel Episcopal Church, 2020 Laskin Road, Virginia Beach, followed by a graveside service and a reception.
