Douglas Smith Obituary

Douglas Smith

Douglas Smith, 54, of Findlay, passed away peacefully Wednesday, March 25, 2026, at Bridge Hospice Care Center, surrounded by caring Blanchard Valley Center Staff.

Doug was born August 11, 1971, in Findlay, to the late Theodore and Florence (Lomen) Smith. Doug is survived by his extended family.

Doug was a lifelong recipient of comprehensive services through Blanchard Valley Center (BVC) of Findlay. He began attending BVC as a little boy for assistance with developmental delays. He attended and graduated from BVC School. After the passing of Doug's mother in 1995, Doug moved to a group home on BVC campus, later moving to a Blanchard Valley Center Residential Services group home near BVC campus.

Doug worked at BVC Industries, at various jobs in the community, and created art at KAN DU. Doug enjoyed participating in many BVC activities, including Special Olympics, Cedar Point trips, and Camp Berry outings. He enjoyed visiting and walking in Hancock County parks. One of Doug's favorite activities was as a player on the Yankees Miracle League baseball team coached by Helen Stahl.

Doug had a large T-shirt collection and frequently shopped for his T-shirts at Goodwill and Salvation Army. He loved Dietsch's ice cream, hamburgers, bacon, sausage, spaghetti and meatballs and meatloaf sandwiches from the Fern Cafe. He enjoyed eating at local restaurants, especially Denny's.

Doug listened to country western music. His favorite musician and singer was Dolly Parton, and often sang along with her songs. Doug loved Superheroes, especially "The Hulk". His favorite TV show was "Walker, Texas Ranger".

Doug will be remembered for his smile, his sense of humor, often teasing those he liked, and his raspy voice and laugh.

Doug lived a full, happy life, especially as an adult, thanks to the continuum of services he received from BVC, the local community, and Hancock County Probate Court. His longtime guardian, Valerie Roszman, would like to thank the many people over the years who cared for and enriched Doug's life, especially the BVC staff, caregivers, nurses and physicians.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, April 10, 2026, at COLDREN-CRATES FUNERAL HOME, Findlay, with Pastor Cynthia Morrison officiating, followed by a gathering at Crates Life Appreciation Center, which all are invited to attend.

In lieu of flowers or memorial donations, Doug's guardian asks that Doug be remembered with random acts of kindness for individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities.

Yesterday

DOUGER DO WAS MY BEST FRIEND, more importantly my family! I worked with Douger one on one for many years, and we have so memories together, riding around singing country songs! Our fav song was, PAINT ME A BIRMINGHAM, and I use to do a circle with my hand, wheni noticed DOUGER DO started doing that with his hand, because the lyrics would say, PORCH GOIN´ ALL THE WAY AROUND, he was someone special that could imitate others exactly how they were! We were never suppose to push that, but to be honest he did it on his own! I will miss you everyday, DOUGER, AND I have already cherished our memories together, that will help me on either you being around. RIP MY BUBBY, and I´ll see you on the other side!
