Doris Louise Salis

Doris Louise Salis, 83, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2023.

She was born July 14, 1940, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and moved to Findlay in 1990 from University of Plymouth in New Hampshire to become Dean, Adult and Continuing Education at The University of Findlay. Doris created Senior Forum at the University for seniors to explore intellectual and timely topics. In 2007, she retired as Assistant Vice President for Curriculum and Accreditation, but taught an online course for the University in arts and culture until Aug., 2020.

Doris was an accomplished musician and music educator. In 1962, she earned a BA in piano and music education from Mount Mercy College, now Carlow University. In 1969, she earned a Master of Music from the prestigious University of Rochester Eastman School of Music, majoring in piano and music literature. She taught piano and was also a classically trained singer. In 1977, she received her Ph.D from University of Pittsburgh, where she majored in higher education with a concentration in the psychology of learning and cognition in adults.

An avid gardener, Doris graduated from The Ohio State University master gardener program and was a long-time member of Findlay Garden Club. She was also an enthusiastic world traveler and a devoted animal lover. She loved beagles and adopted five of them over the years.

Doris is survived by her sister, Susan Salis of Pittsburgh, who thanks the staffs at Brookdale Findlay and ProMedica Hospice for the compassionate care they gave Doris.

Friends are invited to mingle and share fond memories at an informal get-together from 10-11:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 2, 2023, at Hanneman Funeral Home, 201 Osborn Ave., Findlay, Ohio, 45840.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hancock County Humane Society, Teddy's Rescue, or Best Friends Animal Society in Kanab, Utah.
