Doris Jean (Cremeans) Cowgill
Doris Jean (Cremeans) Cowgill, 83, of Van Buren, passed away with her family by her side at Blanchard Valley Hospital Thursday, December 4, 2025. She was born August 25, 1942, in Newport News, Virginia, the daughter of John G. and Gladys (Willis) Cremeans. She married William Cowgill, and they later divorced.
Survivors include son, Jason (Linda) Cowgill of Westerville and daughter, Cassandra (Chad) Van Horn of Van Buren. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Kyle (Ashley) Van Horn of Findlay, Seth Van Horn of Van Buren, Sam Cowgill, and Spencer Cowgill of Westerville, as well as her sister, Juanita Miller of Ostrander, and many beloved nieces and nephews, and dear friends Charlotte Cordial, Patty Davis, and Sara Mead.
Preceding her in death were her parents; brothers, George, John, and Ted Cremeans; brother and sister-in-law, Joyce (John) Cremeans and Robert (Juanita) Miller; and great-niece, Abbey Cremeans.
Doris was a proud graduate of the 1963 class at Grant Hospital School of Nursing in Columbus, Ohio. She enjoyed a 42-year career, including serving as Director of Inservice Education at Marion General Hospital, Coronary Care Unit Staff Nurse at Good Samaritan Hospital in Sandusky, and Emergency Staff Nurse at both Middletown Hospital and Children's Hospital in Columbus. She later spent many years as a nurse in the ICU at Blanchard Valley Hospital, eventually becoming the clinical manager of the Special Care Units. She was deeply respected for her skill, dedication, and compassion. After 22 years of service, she retired from BVH as the Infection Control Nurse and Utilization Review Nurse.
Doris enjoyed all things Ohio State Buckeyes! She especially loved college basketball, cheering for her Buckeyes and the U of F Oilers. She was a voracious reader and loved visiting local libraries to discover the next good book. Knowledge and education were essential to her; she instilled that in her children and grandchildren. Family was her number one priority. She taught her family how to care for others through her patient demeanor, her ability to listen, her words of encouragement, and her wisdom. She has always believed in God and was later baptized as an adult. She is now with Jesus and is fully restored. She loved attending family gatherings and spending time with her children and grandchildren. Her Dutch apple pie and warm chipped beef dip were made with love and shared with many. She loved to cook, travel, and garden. She preferred warm weather, soaking up the sun, especially at the beach, and sitting on her deck with a book or her Kindle.
The family would like to thank the BVH CCU and ER staff for their tremendous care over the last several days. You cared for her with compassion, empathy, competence, advocacy, and professionalism. We are grateful for how you cared for one of your own.
Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, December 10, 2025, at COLDREN-CRATES FUNERAL HOME, Findlay, and from 10-11 a.m. Thursday, December 11, 2025, at Gateway Church, North Main Campus, 620 N.
