Betty Baer Obituary

Betty M. Baer

Betty Marie Baer, 82, of Deshler, passed away Sunday morning, June 23, 2024, at The Meadows of Leipsic.

She was born Jan. 30, 1942, in Bartlow Township. She was the oldest of four children born to the late Howard and Susan (Buhler) Van Scoyoc. She grew up in a faithful home on the family farm. She was a 1960 graduate of Deshler High School. In 1962, Betty married James F. Pelton, Jr., and they had two daughters, Sue Jane and Anna Marie. They were later divorced.

For a short time, Betty worked in the office at the former Koppenhofer Bros. Poultry, Deshler. Then she took a job in the business office at the newly opened Oak Grove Nursing Home, Deshler. She would remain there for over 40 years. She was currently a member of Harvest Fellowship Church and former member at New Beginnings United Methodist Church.

On March 21, 1998, she married Larry Baer in Deshler. They shared over 24 years together before he preceded her in death Sept. 18, 2022.

Betty was an enthusiastic wife and mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, a knitter and crocheter, ceramic painter, and cook and baker. She enjoyed collecting pink depression glass, camping, her dogs (especially Buster), and bible study with the church ladies. She loved her neighbors, family, and Church friends. She also loved playing piano and organ for church over the years and found happiness in taking pictures, especially of her family and their interests.

The last ten months of her life, Betty found a new sense of freedom at The Meadows of Leipsic, where she made many friends, and enjoyed the amenities and activities, especially Bingo. She fought a long and difficult battle with chronic lymphocytic leukemia as well as being a breast cancer survivor. Through it all, she endured it with great strength, grace, and a positive attitude.

She is survived by her daughters, Sue (Richard) Smith, Metamora, Michigan, Anna Flanigan, Hamler; six grandchildren, John (Jessica) Kline, Matthew (Nicole) Kline, Elizabeth (Corey) DeGrandchamp, Alexandria (Andrew) Muench, Brennan Flanigan, Jenna Flanigan; three great-grandchildren, Brooklynn, Elijah, Ophelia and "one on the way"; stepchildren, Karen (Darrel) Hill, McComb, and Larry LeRoy "Bud" (Colleen) Baer, Cygnet; five stepgrandchildren, Justin Hill (Dani Nause), Derrick (Chelsea) Hill, Brandon (Ashley) McKee, Chase (Brittany) McKee, Chelsea Baer; nine step great-grandchildren, Quinn; Jack;, Rowan, Ainsley, Brodie, Ashdon, Lilly, Lila, Easton; a sister, Marilyn Montgomery, Elida; a brother, Edwin Van Scoyoc, Deshler; and brother-in-law, Marvin Maas, Custar.

She was also preceded in death by a sister, Carol Maas and brother-in-law, Steve Montgomery.

Her funeral will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, June 29, 2024, at Feehan-Rodenberger Funeral Home, Deshler, with the Rev. James Erven officiating. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery, Deshler.

Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Friday, June 28, 2024, at the funeral home.
