Berniece Asel Obituary

Berniece Asel

Berniece Asel, 83, of Findlay, died Sunday, March 16, 2025, after two years with cancer. Her journey on this earth is complete, and she now is in the nearer presence of God. She was born on November 16, 1940, in Kirksville, MO.to the late John and Cordelia Still. She married Robert Asel on June 16, 1962, in Anderson, Indiana. They have enjoyed 63 years of marriage.

She is survived by her husband and their three children, Karis (Ed) Allen, Marla (Bryan) Leonard, and Chad (Beth) Asel; eight grandchildren, Drake Allen, Payton Allen, Nolan Allen, Kayce Hanes, Kollin Hanes, Regan Hanes, Leah Asel, and Tyler Asel; one stepgrandson, Seth Leonard; five great-grandchildren, Gracie Allen, Terry Allen, Gideon Allen, Riley Allen, and Claire Allen; a brother, Herb (Millie) Still; and a sister-in-law, Brenda Still. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Fred Still.

Berniece was a 1958 graduate of Fort Collins High School in Fort Collins, CO, and earned her bachelor's degree in 1962 from Anderson University in Anderson, Indiana. She taught English, French, and Spanish at Shaswick High School in Lawrence County in Bedford, Indiana. In 1964, she moved to Findlay, where she worked in the legal department at Marathon Oil Company. While she was raising her family, she typed for a court reporter and worked as a church secretary. Later, she worked for Employee Benefits Corporation, where she retired. After retirement, she worked as the treasurer for College First Church of God.

Berniece was an active member of College First Church, where she was a deacon, sang in the choir, rang in the handbell choir, and attended Rise and Shine, Koinonia, and Soulsearchers classes. She found delight in visiting with others as a part of Stephen's Ministry, which later became a care group. She faithfully attended Women's Bible Fellowship. She was a member of Blanchard Valley Hospital Women's Axillary and volunteered in the gift shop. Berniece also enjoyed volunteering her time to read with the children at Jacobs Primary School.

The family thanks the staff at ProMedica Hospital Cancer Center in Fostoria and Bridge Hospice Care for professional, competent, and compassionate care. They are grateful for Cheri Pellazar, a niece, who cared for Berniece at the end of her cancer journey.

Berniece and I met at the ymca during exercise class. Until she got sick she was always better than me. I wish I had known her longer, she was such a nice person with a beautiful smile. When I visited her at home, she taught me 2 things; how to live with dignity and how to die with dignity. Our loss is heavens gain.
