Barbara Joyce Sherman

Barbara Joyce (Cole) Sherman joyfully rejoined her family in Heaven on Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2023.

On a cold January 5 day in 1940, the 10th and final child was born on the family farm to Charles Austen Cole and Mildred Martha Moore Cole. They named this child Barbara Joyce Cole.

Barbara graduated from Van Buren High School in 1958 and enjoyed many school activities including ensemble, cheerleading, and was named homecoming queen.

She married Donald Sherman on Jan. 8, 1966.

She is survived by her children, Jody (Bob) Hertel, Lori (Chris) Nagy, Tim (Stephanie) Sherman, and Beth (Joe) Hizer; seven grandchildren, Drew, Kristen, Shawn and Brett Hertel, Amber Smith, Kasey Sherman. and Jacob Hizer; and eight great-grandchildren. She was always very proud of each and every one of them, grands and greats alike.

Barb retired from employment with Birchaven in 2016. Barbara was very active in Master Gardeners. Her own gardens were a gorgeous sight to behold.

She was also very active at her church, Van Buren United Methodist. She enjoyed the fellowship that was had while serving in many roles, participating in bell choir and also making noodles and German Chocolate cakes for their fall fundraising events. Barb and Don had many fur babies through the years ending with Gracie Ann who died days before she went into the nursing facility.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to all at Bridge Hospice who helped with her compassionate care.

Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2023, at COLDREN-CRATES FUNERAL HOME, 205 W. Sandusky Street, Findlay. Barbara's funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2023, at Van Buren United Methodist Church, 201 S. Main St., Van Buren, Ohio, 45889. Burial will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, McComb.
