Alice DeLucia Obituary

Alice Mae (Kerman) DeLucia, 81, of Manchester, passed away on Thursday, January 1, 2026 at Courville at Manchester. She was born on September 3, 1944 in New York City and was the daughter of the late Herbert and Elizabeth (Huneke) Kerman. Her mother was an educator and her father was a policeman.

Alice received her undergraduate degrees from Barnard College and Columbia University, and her master's degrees from Middlebury College and Wesleyan University.

She met her husband, Michael DeLucia, while both were graduate students in Paris. They were married for 48 years and had three children: Laura Elizabeth, Christine Margaret, and Stephen Michael. She nurtured her children's curiosity and growth in so many ways.

Alice loved learning, teaching, traveling, and reading. She studied French, Spanish, Italian, and German throughout her life, conversed with people in other languages at any chance she got, and enjoyed recounting her extensive travels. She spent summers with family in her happy place over many decades, at East Pond in Smithfield, Maine.

She taught French at Central High School in Manchester, and multiple languages in the Boston Public Schools including South Boston High School during desegregation.

When living in Cambridge, she was a member of University Lutheran Church, where she married. In Manchester, she was a faithful member of Gethsemane Lutheran Church, and sang in the choir.

She was an accomplished traveler, spending summers at institutes in Europe. She participated in Georgetown University's summer programs in France, Germany, and Italy, as well as other programs in Spain and Mexico.

Alice was a devoted letter-writer, maintaining correspondence with friends and family in multiple countries for decades. The many conversations she enjoyed are cherished by those close to her, with appreciation for her kindness, wit, and interest in varied topics.

She gave in many ways, including establishing the Alice DeLucia Scholarship, for students with English for Speakers of Other Languages at Central High School.

Every new baby she knew received a blanket she lovingly knitted or crocheted. She volunteered throughout her life.

It was a life well-lived.

She is survived by her husband: Michael DeLucia of Manchester, NH; her two daughters: Laura DeLucia and her husband, Hamza Salhi, of Washington, DC and Christine DeLucia and her husband, Matthew Gibson, of Bennington, VT; her son: Stephen DeLucia and his wife, Meredith, of Ukiah, CA; and her two grandchildren: Miles Andrew and Penelope Mae.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date in the spring. Burial will take place at Woodlawn Cemetery in Bronx, NY.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Alice DeLucia Scholarship Fund at the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation, 37 Pleasant Street, Concord, NH 03301-4005. Checks may be made payable to "New Hampshire Charitable Foundation" with "Alice DeLucia Scholarship Fund" in the memo field.

Mike and family, Steve and I are sad to learn of Alice´s death. I enjoyed our visits at Courville and sharing of our grandkids photos. We have such good memories of you all from our days at Gethsemane. I loved Alice´s sense of humor and her wit and will miss her. Rest eternal grant her, O God.

Dear Family De Lucia, I was sorry to hear about the passing of my great cousin Alice. Though we never met, I often thought about our family connection - our grandfathers were twins. I regret that we did not stay in touch or get to meet in person. My thoughts are with you and the family during this difficult time.
Sincerely Elfriede

Alice was indeed a very special lady. I was fortunate to meet her acquaintance at Central High School where she was a colleague for several years. Alice had a delightful sense of humor and a quick wit and I always enjoyed chatting with her. Alice will be missed by all who were fortunate to know her as a lovely woman.

Such a sweet woman and generous woman. She gave me several crochet baby blankets when my grandchildren were born. Sorry to hear of her passing. Condolences to her husband and children.
