Alan Scott Rothey
Alan Scott Rothey, affectionately known as "Scott," passed away peacefully at Birchaven Village in Findlay Monday, March 23, 2026, at age 84. A visionary entrepreneur and passionate family man, Scott was an eternal optimist who saw the possible in the impossible with true passion and grit.
Scott was born May 28, 1941, in
Ogden, Utah, to Albert Godfrey and Margaret Louise (Williams). He graduated from the University of Utah and graduated from graduate school at The Ohio State University. His journey took him from the mountains of Utah to the heart of Ohio, where in 1974, he married the love of his life, Martha (Marty) Flippen, with whom he celebrated 51 years of marriage. He made an indelible mark on the Findlay community and advanced the natural gas industry throughout Ohio.
Scott's professional legacy was defined by his visionary leadership and economic acumen. He served as the Chief Economist for the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio and was one of the founders of Rothey, Bell, and Taub Consulting, A. Scott Rothey & Associates, and served as President of Suburban Natural Gas Company. In 1991, he founded KNG Energy (originally Kalida Natural Gas) with the bold goal of bringing natural gas to rural areas that lacked access to critical infrastructure. Beyond his business ventures, Scott was a dedicated educator, serving as a professor of economics at The Ohio State University.
Scott was a renaissance man who loved art, music, poetry, and sports. He made lifelong friends playing for the OSU Rugby Team and was a founding member of the Scioto Valley Rugby Club. Scott was famously known for swimming in Lake Erie in his small white rugby shorts well into his seventies. He had a deep passion for Irish music, often breaking into loud drinking songs, and found immense joy in the sunsets at Middle Bass Island from the dock he "built himself." As a "Cool Dad," he was his children and grandchildren's biggest fan, asking them for autographs and writing heartfelt notes.
Scott is survived by his beloved wife, Marty; his children, Jennifer Rothey (Aaron) Fritz (daughter with his first wife, Cathie Soutas) of South Weber, Utah, Thomas Seth (Tracy) Rothey of Mason, Ohio, Margaret "Meg" Rothey (David) Berol of Sunnyvale, California, and his "Turkish daughter," Canan Baysal (Can) Gürbag of Irvine, California. He was a doting grandfather to ten grandchildren, Carter (Elizabeth) Fritz, McKay (Lily) Fritz, Hadley Fritz, Brenna Fritz, Clara Rothey, Evie Rothey, Nora Rothey, Henry Rothey, Scotty Berol, and Vinny Berol, as well as his "Turkish granddaughter" Defne Gürbag; and three great-grandsons, Leo, Lincoln, and Sawyer Fritz. He is further survived by his siblings, Randy Rothey, Thom (Rebecca) Rothey, Richard Rothey, and Pam Jones; along with many in-laws, cousins, and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Kenneth Rothey.
