Torney R. Carter, 81, of Vandalia, IL, passed away on Wednesday, February 11, 2026 at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, MO.

A Private Graveside Service and Interment will be held at Liberty Cemetery, Bingham with Myron Kirk officiating. Military Rites will be accorded at the graveside by Crawford-Hale American Legion Post #95, Vandalia, and Brownstown VFW Post #9770. In lieu of flowers and gifts, memorials may be made to Liberty Church. Online condolences can be expressed at https://www.hohltandfilefh.com.

Torney Ray Carter was born on January 13, 1945, in Bingham, Illinois, to Ernie and Opal Sadie (Meyer) Carter. He married Patty June (Koonce) Daugherty on October 13, 2010, and they celebrated 15 years of marriage.

A graduate of Ramsey High School, class of 1963, Torney was drafted into the U.S. Army after high school. He served during the Vietnam War, earning three Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star for his bravery. Following his military service, he worked for the Illinois Department of Corrections until his retirement. Known for his unique personality, Torney enjoyed hunting and shooting.

He was actively involved in his community, being a former member of Liberty Church in Bingham, Vandalia Moose Lodge #1447, Vandalia VFW Post #3862, Crawford-Hale American Legion Post #95, and Keyesport American Legion Post #1994. His life reflected dedication to service and his family.

He is survived by his wife, Patty Carter of Vandalia; son, Troy Carter and wife Jenny of Raleigh, NC; daughter, Tammy and husband Dave Stieren of Farmersville; step-daughters, Kristina Bennett and Kimberly Bladdick, both of St. Louis; step-son, Keith "Buzz" Daughtery and wife Barb of Vandalia; grandchildren, Trevor, Maddie, Kenzie, Logan, Sam and wife Demi, Kara and husband Drew, Jim, Christopher, Traesun, Jhoanie, Kady, and Kaden; great-grandchildren, Joseph and Claire; numerous nephews, extended family and friends.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Ernie and Opal Carter; infant son, Todd Carter; daughter, Elizabeth Carter; brother, Jim Carter; and sisters, Peggy Edgecombe, Janice Kirk, and Eula Hayes.
