Grandson of Ace Borger, Founder of Borger, Texas

David Warren Thompson passed away peacefully in Dallas, Texas, on October 13, 2024, at the age of 89.

Born in Borger, Texas, on September 22, 1935, to Fritz and Helen Thompson, he was immediately a part of history as the grandson of Ace Borger, the founder of the town in which he resided for more than 50 years. David made and grew lifelong friendships that withstood the test of time. Nothing was more fun for him than recounting stories about the shenanigans he and his best friends shared, including dyeing a rival football team's jerseys, stealing and burying a rival fraternity's coveted bell, and getting away with taking an exam answer key in college...because he was knocked out while running through a tunnel while everyone else was apprehended at the other end. We will never forget his boisterous laughter, or many of the family's wide eyes when hearing some of his stories for the first time.

If you asked David, he'd say his greatest accomplishments are his two sons Mark and Matt, and his grandson Ace, who were the joy and light of his life. His friends and family meant everything to him, and David always went out of his way to meet up with an old friend if in the same area even for a short while, and prioritized staying in communication with his best buddies and colleagues. He often mailed his sons articles he thought they would enjoy, the most important parts carefully annotated and highlighted so they wouldn't be missed, which the boys often joked about. For friends and family reading this, know how loved and treasured you were by David.

David also loved his alma mater Texas Tech University and was an avid supporter of Red Raider athletics. His love of the university never waivered, no matter the score, and rarely was a football, basketball or baseball game missed if he could help it. While at Tech, David was a member of Phi Gamma Delta (Fiji) Fraternity and the Saddle Tramps men's booster club, and served as Tech's student body president. After graduation, and getting chastised by Fritz for spending his entire young adult savings on a Rolex watch, David began a long career in banking and finance, serving as vice president of Panhandle Bank & Trust in Borger, working in Savings & Loans, and finally as an investment advisor at First Dallas Securities, where he worked until his retirement.

David was always faithful to God, but forged a closer relationship with Him in recent years through his Sunday School Group at church. We take comfort knowing the big man Himself was there to greet him with a hearty "COME IN THIS HOUSE!" and a slap on the back as he always did for friends and family at his doorstep.
