Joan Lee Nelson Austgen, age 88, of Lincoln, passed away February 22, 2026, at home in Lincoln. She was born on April 10, 1937, in Valparaiso to Orville R. Nelson and Mabel (Magnuson) Nelson. Joan is survived by her daughter, Debbie (Ralph) Alley of Texas; son, Clarence (CJ) Austgen, Jr. of Maryland; brother, Wayne (Susan) Nelson of Valparaiso; two grandsons; four great-grandchildren; friend, Mike Keever of Lincoln. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Austgen; her parents; her sister, Marlene Nichelson; her son, Gary Austgen; and friend, Dick Cerny. Joan had fond memories of her childhood with her brother and helping her sister care for Connie and Billy. Joan was a caring and devoted wife, mother, sibling, grandmother, great-grandmother, neighbor and friend. Joan was an avid reader, caretaker for her neighborhood and enjoyed caring for Skeeter and cat. Memorials are to go to your public library. She will be buried at the VA Cemetery in Houston, Texas.

I lived next door to Joan for a number of years I enjoyed having her as a neighbor. She loved taking care of her friends dog, Skeeter and she adored Cat. My dog Jack absolutely loved going over to visit her. She was such a kind soul and she will be missed.
