Deaconess Gracie Inez-Jones Bunch, age 94, peacefully transitioned from this earthly life into eternal rest on Saturday, February 7, 2026. Having completed her earthly assignment, she answered the Master’s call and entered into the joy of her Lord.
Mother Gracie was known for her warm spirit, friendly nature, and outgoing personality. She loved the Lord Jesus Christ with her whole heart and cherished her family deeply. Her life was a living testimony of faith, service, and devotion.
A faithful and longtime member of Oak Grove Baptist Church, Deaconess Bunch served diligently and joyfully in many ministries, including Sunday School Teacher, the Deaconess Board, the Choir, the Willing Workers Club, the Prayer Band, and the Nurses Unit. Her commitment to God’s work was unwavering, and her service touched countless lives.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Johnie Albert Bunch; her son, Robert Lee Jones; her parents, Mary Frances Jones and Johnnie Matthew Jones; and her siblings, Mary Warren, Rebecca Stevenson, Mabel Howell, Ruth Jones, Johnnie Mae Mitchell, Thomas Jones, and Enos Jones.
She leaves to cherish her precious memory her loving children: Rev. Jarvis A. Jones of Hampton, VA; John Stanley Bunch of Suffolk, VA; Charlene Brown of Suffolk, VA; her foster daughter, Lynda Sweat of Newport News, VA; and Albert Knight of Suffolk, VA—along with a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, relatives, church family, and dear friends.
Mrs. Bunch was also a dedicated employee of the Naval Hospital in Portsmouth, Virginia, where she faithfully served for twenty-three years.
Mother Gracie was deeply loved and respected by all who were blessed to know her. Her legacy will forever live on through the strength of her children, the joy of her grandchildren, and the many lives she touched through her faith, kindness, and service.
Today, we rejoice in knowing that she rests safely in the loving arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, whom she loved and adored. We can almost see her now—lifting her voice in heaven, joyfully singing her favorite song:
“Said I wasn’t gonna tell nobody, But I can’t keep it to myself.”
Well done, thy good and faithful servant. Rest in eternal peace.

To the Family of Mrs. Gracie Bunch, - John(my former band member) , Rev. Jarvis Jones (mom's former pastor) and family, my sincerest condolences to my band mate. Praying that God will bless you all with his comfort and peace as you face the days ahead. This will be one of your greatest losses, and for certain, a struggle to maintain your daily journey in unfamiliar territory. Keep your faith, lean not to your own understanding, and acknowledge that God will provide you with what you need to go forth. My prayers are with you.
